Digital camera recommendation

I don't know anything about cameras, but I think now I need a digital camera with usb port. I really don't want to go over 12000 yen. Its a camera I want for touring around Japan. To me a picture is a picture as long as it comes out clear.
So what do you folks recommend. I most likely need to use Amazon Japan.

The best camera I ever owned was an inexpensive Yashica back in 1970. I loved night pictures of all the lights in Japan and the Yashica made everyone of the night light pictures come out perfect on it's auto setting. A camera that can take good pictures in all types of light is the way to go if one exists now. Another good feature is a good long range zoom lens that covers real close ups and can zoom in on long distance. Beats having to carry more than one lens. Long lasting batteries that can take lots of shots before recharging is needed might come in handy. A program like PhotoShop comes in handy to crop and fix small problems on the photos you take. The photos you shared of your trip were pretty darn good and many of us really enjoyed them.

But I still have no idea what to look for in a camera of about $120 max. I didn't know about the zoom len thing, I'll keep that in mind.
 
I would look at one of the cheaper Canon Powershot models. If you have a decent smartphone camera that is another good option for casual photos.
 
I had a long love affair with the Canon Powershot series. My last one was an S120 I used on my Shikoku pilgrimage.

Since then I've upgraded to a larger Fujifilm mirrorless camera for my more serious photography, and I have a new insta360 that I've been playing with but still feels rather gimmicky. Honestly these days my phone is my daily shooter; if your budget is 12,000 yen you'll have a hard time finding anything better than what's in phones these days.

If you're looking for a dedicated camera but want portability (and lots of accessory options) I would consider trying to find an older gopro (no zoom function but you can set your FOV from wide to narrow).

The reason I need a camera is my Google account for photos, email and drive is near capacity. Google wants to charge me 250 yen a month for more storage. I don't want to go that route.
I went to Edion and Best electronics and would you believe they only each had 2 models of cameras for 16000 yen and then you find yourself looking at pro cameras up to 2 grand. It wasn't too long ago one could choose between 10 or more cameras for less then $250 . Times sure have change. If I knew more about cameras I could go to the book off / recycle shop and check out the older cameras, but I know nothing about cameras.
I will continue to look online today. I wish I had the money to buy a GoPro 9 . I've been watching videos recently, but one thing I notice is that pictures with written words and voice and music background enlightens the message better then video. Just my opinion, but I do like drone shots, they are so cool.

That model is above my budget, but it's sold out on Amazon. I'll be getting 30000 yen from the govt in two weeks, I'd probably buy it, but currently its sold out. Can you recommend me a different camera. As always, thanks.

I can't believe it. Trying to buy a camera is like fishing without bait on your hook. No luck yet.
 
Maybe a camera like this would do. It's marketed for children but it has decent resolution and all the basic features you need. Not waterproof but it's cheap enough that it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to buy another in a year. It even comes with a memory card.

Thanks for looking, but can you find something with zoom. I can go up to 12000 yen today and I'd like to get something in the mail soon.
 
I wish I'd have known before I left, I would've given you my S120 as I no longer have use for it...

Gosh, thanks. I'm not picky about cameras since any camera with a zoom would be fine for me. I'm still looking on Amazon. Tomorrow I get the medical result of the examination. So far all is fine. Tomorrow is fine, then I can plan a departure date. But I'd like to have a camera before leaving. The big stores just no longer carry cheap digital cameras. Went to Direx last night, they use to sell them, no more, just the cameras for cars.

Its a no-brand. I would suspect you will be disappointed with it.

What about a refurbished camera?

Sorry I just checked the link, nothing shows up.
It really looks like I won't be able to get something around 12000 yen. Going to have to spend 18000 yen.

  • The IXY is a small, compact, camera (In the US they are/were called ELPH)
  • Canon is a good camera brand and they are easy to use with well designed menus and buttons.
I think it would be a good camera for casual photography and will still create good images even if the camera shakes a bit when you are taking them.

It says it is used. Is 17800 yen a decent price for it?
and would the instructions be in English?
 
I also endorse Cannon as a good brand for cameras in general.

I've had several Sony cameras, which were ok, but the best one I ever had was a Cannon.

Maybe you can find something here?
