Japanese and cameras: real or stereotype?

While the stereotype is definitely overrated, there are plenty of Japanese people who love taking photos to document special events/ parts of life. Also it is said that Japan is a country that likes things of an asthetic nature (I would have to agree after having lived there) so therefore if this is the case, then of course Japanese people are going to love taking photos if they see them as asthetically pleasing.

hahaha.. nice thread....

Being Half Japanese I have in me the "taking pictures" virus.... I think there are two basic reasons that japanese peopel are picture-freaks..
1. They dont have enough free tie so even when they travel they need to take pictures to remember where they have been...
2. the cameras are so damn cheap in Japanese compared to e.g. Greece, therefore anyone can afford them... plus the memory sticks, plus the accessories, plus the printin cost etc...

I LOVE my camera!

I'm actully kind of a camera nut, I love SLRs, and can use one... properly.

My dad was into cameras and art stuff ( some university degree in fine arts?) and I was intrested in how to use the ever confusing SLR camera.

(I'm from Hong Kong btw.) Back in Hong Kong, I don't think I ever saw anyone just holding a camera to go out... I guess it's only for special occasions.

But does anyone remember reading a '88 ways to know you're asian' things?

one of them was: If you're under 20, you own an expensive walkman, if you're over 20, you own an expensive camera.

(which is so true)

What 88 ways to know you're Asian' things? Can you show me a link?

Sadly now that i think about it, I am japanese and i want to be a photographer :p

Well, the association of Japnese people with cameras can't be any worse a stereotype than young black males wanting to be rappers or basketball players. It wouldn't surprise if unenlightened people consider that a stereotype. Not all young black males wear the baseball caps cocked to one side, the overly baggy jeans with the waistband down to the crotch and Timberlands, not all of them play basketball or like rap music, I've seen a few exceptions to that rule. As for Japanese and their love for picture taking, perhaps I've already mentioned this, but I find nothing wrong with that. But that's just my opinion.

My boyfriend takes pictures of the food we eat all the time. Now, like Pavlov's dog, whenever I see a flash I salivate....😊

I'de love a nice photographer camera, film-using...but meh, im too poor and lazy.
