News Illegal Stay and Illegal Employment Prevention Month

Found on a Twitter thread which caused some uproar among NJ residents.

We are all aware of Traffic Safety Weeks, where the NPA, in collaboration with neighbourhood associations and other groups, tries to promote compliance with road safety regulations. It is the first time I have heard of illegal residence and employment prevention campaigns at several locations in Tokyo (mainly in Shinagawa, where the immigration centre is located) and cute "Town Watch" mascots to bring home the message to even the youngest.

Yeah, this is getting a predictably hostile reception from the foreign contingent on Twitter, and I guess it is well-deserved as it provides justification for suspicion of all foreigners. Feels like this is a particularly outdated way of getting this message across. You used to see these kinds of messages at workplaces in the States, but that was decades ago, and more or less aimed at management.

We should all learn and remember the names of those who died in Japanese immigration custody. And if any of these neo Soviet community spies come at us with questions or any police come based on their suspicions, we should ask what they know about the dead and if they considered that could happen to us before they decided to stick their noses in.

Thoughtless sometimes seems like a modern plague but I am pretty sure is a human constant.

I thought the same the first time I read it then I realized he meant "Non-Japanese" residents.

I sometimes wonder if all the old WWII movies still showing in reruns , the "evil" Japanese keeps hatred of Japanese/Asians flared up till this day. My father and some others who fought the Japanese in WWII kind of brain washed us kids into hating the Japanese for years. I think some of those kids never got rid of the hate drilled into them. I remember my Japanese exchange student came home from her college class , upset that a girl on the bus verbally attacked her , calling her a "fu#king Jap" and warning her she better go back to Japan and this was just a few years ago. Reading a story like this seems to dredge up that old hatred. I think. Just my humble opinion.
