Writing hiragana etc on PC

When writing any kind of japanese writing on the computer, how do you write it so that it's ok with unicode etc?

I use the function in windows to write hiragana but on most forums, pages etc it becomes questionmarks so how do you write it properly so that it dosnt become these nice questionmarks?

It's set up lite this atm:

- Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver. 8.1
- Microsoft Natural Input 2002 ver. 8.1

do I need to fix somethings in the extra options on the input forms or something else so that it will work?

One more thing, When I run japanese or korean programs on my comp I always get ???? instead of the kanjis etc. and on some sites that are on japanese as well as some that I think is japanese on this forum is just wierd symbols all the way. How can you fix this?

Two questions.
1. Does it do it on _this_ forum?
2. What browser are you using?

You need to set your computer to use Japanese (or korean) coding for non-unicode programs. As you want _both_ you might want to look into a free MS program called AppLoc (AppLocale). (Do a forum search here for the link).

Did you check you were using the right encoding to view the pages? If you've got Internet Explorer then try
Right Click browser window -> Encoding -> Japanese (Auto-select)

1. It did yes, Probably not anymore since I fixed the encoding.

Only the input problem is left then ^^

you need to install the international option on windows setup. You can get it from www.microsoft.com That is what I have and it works good. See look

This forum isn't actually set up very well for Japanese text. There's some glitch that causes it to display in Western European encoding by default (every now and again I pester them about it). The thing is that with Some[/b] browsers users can enter text in Japanese anyway and have it display properly. Other browsers (Safari 1.2.3 on the Mac OS and now, apparently, Opera (?) ) have to select Japanese (Shift-JIS) when editing their messages. Then other users have to select Japanese (Shift-JIS) to read them.

Well hate to be a party-pooper but I think the Japanese support might be better in Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox (assuming you don't want to use Internet Explorer).

P.S. If you have Windows XP you don't need to download anything from www.microsoft.com for International support (except maybe for that AppLoc thing I mentioned). Basic Japanese text display and text entry is all installed from the Windows OS disk.

Yes, I installed japanese character support from the WinXp disc so then I have the international option

The input is what does not work correctly, atleast at some places because I can write on MSNM and in another forum on japanese.

On this forum and on most places it maked all the hiraganas to questionmarks instead of showing the hiragana, and the hiraganas are not behind those questionmarks becasue they get converted somehow probably to unicode so that it's just questionmarks, that's where the problem probably is.

here is what I do when inputing hiragana:

1. I press alt+shift to change to japanese input
2. I press alt+capslock for it to write hiragana and not romaji
3. I type in the romaji for the work lets say baka and the outcome is hiragana untill I press the Send/Post to send the info to the server. I's there anything that I don't that you should do?

I suspect it is not the IME that is at fault but where it is being used.

Did you specifically check that the encoding was set to shift-JIS before typing? Note that even if you set the encoding correctly before hitting the [reply] or {quote} button you have to re-set it again after doing so.

I'm quite sure there's nothing wrong with your IME settings or the procedure you've noted above. As I suggested before I think you should try Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox instead of Opera and see if that improves matters.

IT WORKED!
I had to set the encoding specially to shift-JIS and then type in and then it worked

きりきりまい <-- got that from kirikirimai

hmm.. the input style has changed, when i type kirikirimai

きりきり舞！ <-- thats what i normally write it so that it's correct but I cant change the last symbol as I used to be able to I can only change the whole word :meh:

きりきり舞 to write it now I had to first choose for kirikiri and then mai as I wrote kirikiri first, fixed it write mai and fixed that.
