My wife's fashion has deteriorated a lot recently, now comprising casual clothes from Uniqlo that are rather shapeless, bland and uninteresting. Living in Tokyo, the comparison of such clothes against those of other ladies here is rather dispiriting.

We're both professional high earners in our mid 30s, but her job allows her to wear casual clothes. I like clothes and think that looking smart is very important both for how you appear to others and in an aspirational sense.

I'm desperate for her to wear nicer clothes and keep taking her to department stores and will gladly pay for anything, but this is always met with a severe and disappointing lack of interest.

It is not really right to air this in public, but any tips or suggestions from other forum members who have experienced the same would be highly appreciated.

Haha, oh boy. Female advice time!
Firstly. Do you dress impeccably sharp and fashion forward yourself? If not, then don't even try to bring it up unless you're leading by example.
Secondly. Is anything going on with your wife, perhaps she's not feeling at her emotional best. Emotional issues are often reflected in wardrobe choices. If she's feeling bland and unexciting it maywell be reflecting in how she dresses herself.
Thirdly. What do you mean by 'shapeless, bland an uninteresting'. There's a big difference between wearing all black, plain cut clothes and dressing like a bum.
Fourthly. Sounds like you're being more than a little bit shallow and materialistic. I checked out Uniqlo, while it may not be trendy it's a far cry from inappropriate for a 30-some year old woman. Trying to keep up with the Jones's and pressuring your wife into competing against the all the other women on the street is just bad form.

I suggest a trip to Luckenbach, Texas. Sounds like she is already there and you just need to join her.
