When asking the question 'who is it', which is more appropriate?

Dare desu ka?
Or
Dare wa?

"dare desu ka?" is more appropriate.

"dare wa?" isn't exactly a question, nor does it exactly make sense, and means something like "as for who?".

And just so you know, the sentences get more polite as you go down the list.
