Who can help build a Nihongo tutorial ?

I'm doing ok job teaching bamafan right now. He knows katana, baka, nihon, nihongo, nihonjin he knows those kanji and i taught him how to use them in phrases. I've also helped him a little bit with katakana and words like sainofu which is sign off.

Why do you think this site is called 'Japan Reference' ?

PaulTB seems to be going step-by-step learning (like in textbooks), which I sort of favor more as it makes the learning more solely rely on "this tutorial" as their source of learning. People don't need to know everything when they're just beginning. It's better to "hide" things from them first so it won't cause confusion.

I guess everybody learn their own way. Some people (like me) prefer reference type list, others (like Paul) prefer step-by-step text book methodology. I think we should do both. If I was going to do this tutorial all by myself, following my only opinion, I would not have started this thread.

In all seriousness, though -- no offense, but I'm just skeptical of how well you could be "teaching" BamaFan when you're pretty much a beginner yourself, and the fact that 'katana' and 'baka' were among the first words that you decided to '"teach" seems to validate my suspicions. Your desire to help is admirable, but don't you feel in any way like you should develop a better understanding of the language for yourself before you start trying to explain it to other people? That's not meant to be an insult, by the way -- I'm genuinely curious.

Personally, the last thing I would ever want to do is mislead a beginning student by "explaining" to them something that I didn't have a pretty solid handle on myself... but maybe that's just me.
