Which sentences would be used?

Dear native English speakers,

Would you tell me which sentences would be used? Do (a), (b) and (c) have the same meaning in each set?

1a) I switched off my cell phone.
1b) I put off the cell phone.
1c) I turned off the cell phone.

2a) My parents let me have my TV set in my room.
2b) My parents let me put my TV set in my room.
2c) My parents let me install my TV set in my room.
[Can you omit "set" in the sentences above?]


3a) My parents want me to spend more time with my family in the living room.
3b) My parents expect me to spend more time with my family in the living room.
3c) My parents hope that I spend more time with my family in the living room.

4a) They want me to talk about many things with them.
4b) They expect me to talk about many things with them.
4c) They hope that I talk about many things with them.

1b would not be used.

2c would not be used. Also, in America, we actually omit "set". I never hear anyone call it a TV set. Children would just say, "my parents let me have/put my TV in my room."

3 & 4 - They could all be used and sound natural, but the meanings vary.

I agree with clark on both question 1 and 2.

And for 3 and 4 the meanings do vary. Mostly in levels of severity. Expect is the most "severe" it may even imply that there might be consequences for not doing what is expected. Both of the others mean about the same thing. I think when you say hope it means that they think it is less likely that you may actually do it.

To "put off" usually means "to delay."
