American people say "soccer" instead of "football" to avoid to confuse it with "American football" (I suppose).

But I wonder where does that word come from?

Football comes from foot and ball. Simple. But "soccer"? What's soccer?

It sounds ugly, like s-u-c-k-e-r, doesn't it?

The term soccer is a British abbreviation of "association football," which used to be the "official" term in Britain to distinguish it from other types of football, such as rugby.

I had no idea. So, thank you very much for posting.
