What's the difference between となる and なる?

Hello guys.

I've stopped into some confusion words. The sentence is:

『ゼルダの伝説』シリーズのヒロインで、舞台となるハイラル王国の王女。

Rikaichan says となる while Wakan says となる doesn't exist.

My translation was:

"The heroin of the Legend of Zelda series, who will be the princess of the kingdom of Hyrule."

I couldn't fit the meaning of 舞台 in the sentence but I kind of understood its meaning.

Is it right?

You need to rethink the original, though, and it is necessary to know 舞台 means "stage" (like "stage" where actors or dancers perform).
