Over the years, I have visited Japan many times. This fall, a great friend of ours is getting married in Tokyo, and my wife and I have been invited. The wedding will be at a hotel, not a shrine or temple.
I know that the usual deal for men is to wear a really conservative dark suit, but I don't own one. I would have to buy one just for the occasion, or rent one and take it on the plane, or maybe rent one in Tokyo. But what I would really, really like to do is wear a traditional man's kimono. Of course, I'd still have to rent one, but there must be places in Tokyo where I can do that.
I ran the idea by a Japanese woman I know, and she didn't think it would be seen as disrespectful or grossly weird.
Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

A black suit is best. You can get one for about $100 at a Canadian department store. Nobody will be wearing a kimono (at the reception, at least, which is the majority of the wedding), so you'll probably feel very uncomfortable for the three hour length of it, being the white guy wearing Japanese clothes, while everyone else wears Western clothes.

I've been to four wedding receptions here, and one ceremony, and not a single person wore a kimono, except the bride for about 15 minutes.

I agree, you will probably feel a bit awkward after the novelty has worn off!

If you are still keen, be prepared to pay a king's ransom for it .... will be over 42,000 yen for overnight hire.

Here's a link:
Welcome to Kimono Rental AKI, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.

If you go for the dark western suit, don't forget the plain white tie, which all the men will probably be wearing.

Sigh. I suppose you guys are right. Oh well, maybe the hotel will have decent baths.
