What kind of cross-culturally mixed food makes you feel sick?

Well, I found this new school of thought on a Japanese woman's web site related to international marriage.

I didn't want to accept this yucky phenomenon however, just in case, I felt out my Canadian boy friend and he says:

to me, it sounds as "over the top" as our sea urchin ice cream here..

Is it common in Canada? or even in some other country?

Not many foods make me sick in the stomach.
Yogurt with rice sound very strange, but I would not forget the fact Nattou with rice is a common meal for the Japanese.

Well im not Japanese, but I like plenty of odd foods mixed together.
Rice with Mayo and Okonomiyaki sauce
Toast with mashed potato (not really cross cultural, but it is if I use Korean bread, with potatoes!)
French fries and Chocolate Icecream
We used to eat rice with butter years ago.
Noodle sandwiches
Lasagne sandwiches

Different types of french cheeses make feel kind of naucious, I guess it's because the milk isn't pasturized. But normally my stomach seems to be able to adapt to most types of food.

sorry.., I think I led people to a misunderstanding..
I meant experimental mixed food between two different cultures.

e.g. ramen + cheese, natto + pizza, etc. :sorry:

any of these don't sound so yucky to me, save for French fries with chocolate Icecream..lol
my BF eats rice with butter too.

as for my favorite culturally mixed food, its ice cream tempura (fried ice cream).
I could eat is 8 days a week!!

Anything involving mayo added before the food is cooked. e.g. on Pizza. It's criminal.

I was saw on a tv program that somewhere in Thailand (maybe?) they would eat ice cream on french bread. Not the first thing I'd think of but it doesn't sound REALLY bad ^^;

I can't really see why this one is so weird. 'Rice pudding' which is basically rice mixed with milk, sugar (and sometimes fruit) is a pretty common dessert in many countries. It's not that much of a leap from milk to yoghurt.

Do you think so? I was prejudiced against having mayo on pizza, too. But once I ate a slice of pizza I thought was covered with cheese but turned out to be mayonnaise! It wasn't all that bad...

What I think is criminal is "Natto Sandwich"! I heard a half-Japanese, half-Caucasian "tarento" say on TV that she likes it!

If I should HAVE to eat them both, I'd prefer to have them on different plates.

That depends, if it's just Yoghurt as in store-bought original Yoghust mixed with just rice, than it's a HUGHE leap from the food you're describing.

Well, the other day I made macaroni cheese for my friend, and if I hadnt been here in Korea im sure it would have been great, but now im so used to eating spicy food, and foods with lots of flavour, that it was BLAND.

So, I ate it with kimchi. Kimchi and Pasta is all good!

i dunno if this is relevant because it's not cross cultural, but i'll post it anyway.

In 8th grade I knew someone who liked to eat popcorn and milk for breakfast. to me that's just nasty.

I mean if it's corn pops and milk... then fine... but popcorn and milk? *shudder*

And mayo on pizza is good... especially the japanese spicy mayo... if you haven't tried it, def do!

And I don't think they sell it in stores, but heres how you make it:

Mayo (any kind... preferably hellmans or kewpie)... and shichimi (for those who don't know, the hot red pepper flakes usually put in noodles). I don't know how much you guys can tolerate hot/spicy food etc... so mix them together to taste.

I guess plenty of people must like it since it's so common. I think it tastes revolting.

A pizza with mayonnaise?? Sounds like they are seriously downmarket and haven't received their mozzarella shipment or any other cheezu which can be substituted.

How many of you love Hawaiin Pizza? (I love pineapple, but cant stand it cooked)
Well, I was talking to an Italian guy the other night who thought it was absoloutely criminal to put pineapple on a pizza. In his mind I guess he too would find it downmarket compared to 'original' Italian pizza.

Was it just me, or was there actually cheese on the Pizza's with mayo too?
Japans cheese selection is better than korea anyway.

I've never tried it because I can tell I won't like it.
I never got the idea of using pineapple in some Chinese dishes that are salty & spicy or on top of a steak either.

I think they make a regular pizza with cheese and put drizzle of mayo in a circle over it.

A lot of Japanese people seem to like mayonnaise; they served a salad with apples, cucumber and oranges in mayonnaise at school I went to. I really didn't like it.

I hated the salad which an apple and raisin of a school meal were in

I don't find it so weird. French and Belgian people (and maybe others) have what they call "riz au lait" (milk rice), which is rice cooked in hot milk with sugar and an egg. Add some brown sugar on it and it's ready. Delicious ! :gohan: Once, I overcooked my rice in Japan, so I just added milk, sugar and an egg in the saucepan and made "riz au lait" with it.

This is probably not a cultural difference (just interpersonal), but my wife loves mixing sweet and salty stuff. She doesn't mind eating some kimchi while drinking hot chocolate, or alterning mouthfuls of crisps/chips with caramel pudding. :erm:

Ooo yeah, there was cheese on the pizza. It was a pizza taken from my local pizza store in NY, and the spicy mayo was from the Japanese restaurant I worked at.

I was introduced to this combo by my co-worker/close family friend who is Japanese. Hey, I thought it was weird too, but i tried it, and it was gooooodddd...

(Cough! Cough!) - Not being facetious! - I really do have the 'flu ... again ...! However :

My son would kill for it .... but .... IMHO ... Hawaian Pizza is an affront, an abomination and an insult to Italian cuisine (such as it is)!

Your Italian friend was quite right! Pineapple on pizza just isn't right! :frown:

....on the other hand ... if pizza has been around for as long as it's supposed to have been ..... where the heck did the first guys (Romans?) get their tomatoes ....?
