what is the reason for racism in Japan ?

true indeed, but there other names for other dicrimination. Saing that there is no racism at all is totally wrong. Of course there are other isms besides racism too. Just like in everyother country.

I think a great majority of the time 'racism' just isn't the right word. I don't think it gets to the point of 'racism' in the sense that I, as someone who was born and raised in the US, conjure when I hear the word. I don't think it gets that far in people's minds. That's why earlier I used the word 'non-racism': it kind of looks like racism, but it's not really racism per se.

The world is not a black and white place. I am not ignoring anything. Rather, I am being more grey in my definitions. I find that in Japan, you can either act out against what you perceive as racism, be that with sarcasm or more direct means; however, in doing so you often make the problem worse, as that is a very "un-Japanese" response.

Getting upset a lot is considered childish in Japan, but being able to endure things and trying to find a positive solution is the mark of an adult.

The other thing you can do is to set an example for them. Learn Japanese language and culture as you already are doing. Know things about their country that most Japanese don't. (Don't flaunt this knowledge, though. Stay humble about it.) Be peaceful and friendly. Try to beat other people to the punch line and make fun of your 'gaijinness' playing on the stereotypes.

This will make them relaxed and eventually they will see that you're just another person, just like them (although with a different face!)

This second way is my way, and I rarely encounter racism, even by your definition.

Look I have no problem with people calling me gaijin. I have an problem calling me with something else. And yes you know I think it is only fair that same rules apply to people. I think its only fair. To tell you the truth Mikawa Ossan I have hard time even reading your messages. Its like being totally ignorant about the problem its self. Learning more Japanese language was more like **** than I expected. The more I learned the more I found, that people are only intrested making fun of me. and teachers would change the way they speak so it would be even harder to understand. (dont apply to all teachers)

Look my time is limited in Japan, why dont you just shut up, if you dont speak standard Japanese. My time is very limited here.

........... what is wrong with you? If your time is so limited then why the **** do you care? You'll leave soon.
Most of the time japanese people don't even know that they are being offencive and I wouldn't even call that racism, I'd say it's ignorance.

And even if you were to stay in Japan all your life what could you do about what you perceive as racism? Tell them to stop?
If you can't deal with it you should just leave. You'll end up doing something bad like getting in a fight and it will only increase the ignorance/hate of the person you attacked. He/she will probably talk about it to his/her friends and familly too.
 
Actually I am physically quite small size so it would be extremely stypid from me to get to fight. I am only having my rant here. I think that calling somebody with stupid names.. like, hey you old cow based on somebody's skin color rates pretty much as racism.

Maybe you'll feel better if you try to look at what has happened to you in this way:

There's and an old folk tale about the fox who wanted to taste the grapes in the wineyard. The grape, however was so high, that despite fox's desperate efforts and jumps, it was still out of reach. Then the fox got angry and said that the grape is not worth the efforts, it is actually so sour and bad for health, and so on, everything bad it could think about the grape.

Just try to compare it with your situation. Jealosy and envy are universal feelings, why should the students in your university make difference...

I had same experiences , many times, and I felt terrible, then began to think that people are just jealous and envious.

I've got to agree with Void here. I did enjoy the 'Why don't you just shut up' line. Superbly offensive.

Mr.Jones, it has been very revealing to read your posts and see how you have controlled this thread. No offence to you, but this really explains a lot.
 
Actually I do speak standard Japanese quite well, thank you. In fact I think I maybe said all of one English sentence over the past couple of days and as a joke at that.

Perhaps the problem is not in my lack of Japanese but in your lack of maturity. I am trying to be civil and friendly; I think it not too much to expect the same in return.

I don't think Mrjones is asking Mikawa Ossan to shut up! I think he is merely stating what he thinks when his Japanese colleagues use non-standard Japanese when addressing him.

I've been almost in every prefecture in Japan,and everywhere I've seen at least one bar with Russian kinpatsu bijo (blond beauties) working as ,...ahem...companions. Many of the Japanese males think about Russian women in this way. Would you be happy if they start talking about you same thing?If the person you like and care for, hears this. If they start spreading this in the place you live and work, and people whose opinion you value high, hear this.
'Cuz this is what has happened to Mrjones.And that is the reason he is so hurt and angry.
By the time, why don't you have a look at the movie "Bitter sweet" (korean movie). Then you'll have gems for a whole bracelet
 
I will admit that I don't frequent bars here in Japan, although I've travelled quite a bit here, but I've never seen these pubs. Having said that, I do completely believe in their existance.

Still, I don't think that Japanese men see Russian women in general in that way. I think that most of the men who frequent such places are fully congnizant that those establishments are a reality all onto their own.

Remember that for every Russian woman engaged in that business there's more than a few Japanese women doing the same thing. I think that most Japanese men realize that it's only business and not some kind of "character" issue.

Because people under 25 are (generally speaking) less mature than older people.

For example, when three 10 year-old schoolboys danced around me on a Yamanote Line train last year singing 'America-jin, America-jin! Big nose! Smelly!' they were acting in an immature fashion, trying to make themselves look cool in front of their mates. Mind you, I'm sure their parents would love to do the same, but decorum prevents them from doing so...

(Their 'performance' was swiftly ended by sharp scowl and an assurance that I wasn't American. They scurried away like startled rats before I could address the other issues they raised.)
 
I think both of you taehyn and Taiko666, have very good points for the topic. Parents, friends.. personally I would also add location to the points as well. Based on thinking, people who see foreigners less than others, are usually more affaraid of them, this is true in my home country too.
 
ought to disappoint you you haven`t discovered America there. In many countries, from Europe to Midlle East, Asia or Latin America. Then what? But you will be surprised if you`ll dig a bit deeper and learn from where many of them are. Many from former Soviet union republics and now independent countries. We are all Russians abroad. As for the matter - i`ve encountered (or my friends did) either judgement, it is not a big deal when you see from whom it comes from.
as my shifu would say "just let this energy pass through you, to resist it will make situation even worse"

The reason is the same for racism from every other country, its called fear and ignorance.

It also tends to be a minority world philosophy in developed nations.
