What's new

What is it like working as a criminal lawyer in Japan?

Aw, no. I intend to fail all my exams, just for fun.

Thanks. Now I know how seriously to take your inquiry and how much effort to put into answering it for you.

If your Japanese isn't good enough to google information in Japanese about how it, then you are light years away from being able to get qualified anyway. Don't waste our time.

Lol I was just joking, relax.

Yes, I have one, but they do not mention the structures that you helped me with. I have very good grades, but I am looking to improve.
じゃあそんな教科書使うのやめて別のに変えることですね。毎回毎回人に聞くよりはるかに役に立つでしょうから。

We don't want to waste our time for you joke, I'm afraid.

Fair enough. I am sorry, my parents both just died 2 days ago, I'm only 18, I deal with grief via humor. I am sure you could forgive me for being a bit "off", and wasting your precious time. Sorry.

Yes, I just picked a year, I was in a rush to make an account, I did not really think that it mattered? I am not here to be interrogated anyway. Mike, I honestly do not get the impression you know much about criminal law in Japan because so far you have only asked me a ridiculous question that should be rhetorical, therefore inviting derision. I am aware that a minority pass the exam, however. I honestly just want to do something with my college career (which I have just started) in another country. I already speak another language fluently, and I may travel to that country instead to practice law later on, but it is riddled with corruption (as any system though). I read that there is a shortage of lawyers in Japan.
I wish to learn as much as I can now so I can start saving up money, especially as my parents have gone.

Certainly, it matters. A 28 year old with only rudimentary Japanese and no current background in law is hardly to be taken seriously when making the kind of inquiry you make. You wouldn't believe some of the not-a-snowball's-chance-in-hell Japanese dream job inquiries we get from people who are just a total waste of time.

Where did you read it? The government changed the policy and the number of the lawyers in 2015 increased more than twice since 2000. Japan Federation of Bar Associations insists to reduce the number of the passers of the bar examination now.

Oh, I am certainly not one of those types of people. I am 100% serious in my intention. I study law incredibly hard, and you may find this hard to believe, but I have the legal knowledge of a law student who has been studying for 5 years at university due to my background.
Could we please start again? I really do want to soak up the linguistic/cultural knowledge available on this website, because I am not a waste of time.

My country's law society wrote about it, but I cannot say whether they are reliable or not.

You're right, I find it very hard to believe you have the legal knowledge of a law student who has been studying for five years at university. Are you eighteen or twenty-eight years old? Go pass the bar in your own country before tackling one that is rumored to be even harder, and in a foreign language.

What is your current Japanese level? Test score or overall evaluation if you don't have one.

How will you provide tuition here in order to be accepted for the student visa?

Why Japan, if I may be so bold?

And why bother to delete your age in your profile now, instead of just changing it to the correct value?

There has only ever been one foreigner who has ever passed the Japanese bar, and he was born and raised here. Its a tough exam with a low pass rate. And passing it doesn't make you a lawyer, you have to follow it up with a year of study at the Legal Training Institute.

Assuming you passed those hurdles, you would then be more or kess completely shut out of employment anyway since there is a glut of lawyers on the market now and not enough work for them.

A more realistic, but still extremely difficult to obtain, line of work would be as a specialist in foreign laws, which is what most foreign lawyers are designated as. This would be transactional work and not criminal, you just need three years practice in your home jurisdiction to qualify for the visa, though finding a job would be a problem as the market is limited.
