This isn't a complete sentence, and requires some more context to interpret accurately. Also, there's a Chinese character mistakenly in there: れた. The intended character is れた

Can you spot the difference? They're almost identical but completely different characters. Google translate still catches the gist.

What's missing is the end of the sentence, which tells us what exactly is unfortunate. This is like saying "Unfortunately, ____________ whether they liked him that much or broke up." The end of the sentence would fill in the blank, whether it was "I don't care," or "it doesn't matter" or "we'll never find out,"
