Microsoft admits that Vista is a failure

Microsoft is now allowing Business and Ultimate users to downgrade back to XP. I find this very amusing, seeing how it's a sign of weakness within the operating system. Could they have possibly created worse publicity for themselves? I for one am glad I waited on Vista, I'll just buy a 32-bit copy of XP Professional to dual-boot on my Macbook Pro. I can't believe I once thought about getting Vista. -_-

I need a new desktop, but have put off buying one because of Vista that comes with them. I hope if I wait long enough, they might get the worst bugs worked out. I'm quite happy with XP.

I am still on Windows 2000. From what I see now from Micorsoft, I might as well try Ubuntu Linux next, which to me looks pretty promising

Vista failed. compatibility is rubbish, and it is not as nice as xp.
I still work on 95 most of the time...

The lines are blurring between Apple computers and Windows-based computers, you know that, right? You should visit an Apple store and see for your self. You can even boot Windows on their systems now, so any program that doesn't have a OS X equivlent is taken care of..

This is news to me and I am smiling, Never want to use Vista in any shape or form, have been told that Vista allows outside authorities to track your entire internet usage no matter what you have installed on your own PC.

I bought a new laptop computer about a month ago. of course it had Vista on it, but I didn't want it, so I went through the trouble of buying XP separately just so I wouldn't have to deal with Vista. I would have used Linux, but as I learned last time I tried, it just doesn't have the driver support or software I need.

What distro did you try? Ubuntu has everything an average to business-level computer needs.

Ubuntu doesn't support among other things my scanner and printer. That was its death knell.

Both times I tried to use Linux I gave up pretty fast because it only seemed to be able to connect to my school network (ergo, the internet) about 4% of the time at random. Also I couldn't figure out how to use Japanese input, and having to install most of my programs by compiling them was a colossal pain in the neck.

The last straw was when my secondary hard drive crashed and LILO wouldn't let me boot Windows because it couldn't find the broken hard drive (Windows was entirely installed on the healthy hard drive).

I've been thinking of giving Linux another try to see if it's become any less lame in the last 3 years but alas, I don't really feel like re-partitioning my hard drive.

My scanner is a Canon CanoScan D1250U2. My printer is also a Canon.

Once upon a time I looked pretty hard for an Ubuntu driver for the scanner, but it was no dice. I've pretty much given up on Linux as it doesn't quite fit my needs (I have other dissatisfactions with it as well, although driver support is at the top of the list!)

I'm seriously starting to think of switching over to a Mac next time I have to buy a computer. Microsoft is making it be too much of a hassle to toy around with your computer's hardware, which was one of things about pc's that I've always liked. If the only alternative that will do what I want when I want most every time is a Mac, then I will gladly make the move.

Try Ubuntu, most problems are fixed upon updating the OS itself.

Faustianideals, thank you for your offer, but you're about a year too late. If I ever try to take the leap to linux again, you'll be the first person I consult, though!

Windows sucks in general, but xp is the most patched up version at the moment. I had to accept vista when I got my laptop, but I don't think it really leaks so much any more. I prefer linux, but it is good to have one windows machine too so you can make everything work. I'm not good at making games work with linux! ^^;

Getting a mac some day would be outstanding!

Funny you should mention Vista. A few weeks ago, I was chatting with one of the IT folks at the facility where I work and asked him if the federal government would upgrade all it's computers from Windows 2000 to Vista. Well, the guy broke out laughing, saying there was no way that would happen because Vista was, in his words, "junk on steroids" and the government wasn't about to waste so much as a cent on the faulty upgrade. I found his reaction priceless, and from everything I've heard and read about Vista, ol' Bill Gates has a real stink bomb on his hands. Makes me all the more happier I'm a Mac user.

I was happy with my XP box and then it suddenly died on a Friday night.. Saturday morning, I bought another PC because I needed to get some school work off the dead PC. It came with Vista on it. Sunday afternoon I was unpacking my newly bought Mac Mini.
I would've slapped Linux on it or downgraded to XP, but apparently it was so new, that there weren't drivers for the motherboard and video card. The head of the programming department at work upgraded his pc to Vista and isn't pleased with it. Moving files to another drive, somewhere on the network, even to a folder on the same hard drive is slower than it was in XP. Vista just isn't that impressive.

My new desktop has the Vista Home Premium. Each time a new Windows version comes out, it takes me about a month to get used to it. So far I have not had any major problems. I did somehow goof myself up though; kind of funny. A notice came up saying the spare hard drive was full ? Turns out there is a TIVO like recorder for watching TV on this PC. I was Watching the comedy show "King of Queens" and somehow turned on the TIVO, no clue how I did it. It recorded every show for about 3 days on several channels. I ended up with about 22 episodes of "King of Queens" recorded. One of these days , I guess I will have to read the instruction book that came with my new PC.

I will probably make the move to Vista when my current PC dies (it's been humming smoothly for the past 5 years).

Since I'm a captive Windows user (due to software that runs on Windows only), I've read up a little on the Vista and found that the real change and improvements in Vista is found in Business version or higher.

Any comments on that?

Yes, wait until there are some proper patches that fix many of the issues of Vista, and wait for the price to drop a little on both the software and hardware needed to run it before buying. There are not a shakers and movers to help motivate the reason to switch over right now. Wait a little while and see how it shapes up before making the switch.

Well supposedly: I heard that when you buy a new computer, make sure it is already on the computer. It will work better that way.

At the facility I work at, we just upgraded both our computers and OS a couple of weeks ago, going to Windows XP and so far, it seems to work well. As I mentioned in a previous post on this topic, the federal government never had any intention of going to Vista from jump street, so it looks like we'll be using XP now and for many years to come. I'm still amazed Microsoft allowed a stink bomb like Vista out the door and make a mess everywhere. That's sure gonna cut into their profit margin!

My first big problem with Vista.

Lost my E-Mail send 4 days ago. I can receive some, but can't get anything to go out. I sent out an E-Mail with a lot of pictures and it refused to go; said something about my E-Mail memory being to small? The E-Mail is stuck in the out box and nothing I do has been able to erase it? If I still had XP , I know I could have fixed it in a few minutes. With Vista, it seems to be a nightmare , trying to use it "easy fix" system. Gateway has a recovery disk, if I want to erase my complete hard drive and start over; hope I don't have to do that. Latter today, I hope to get into the registry and see if I can fix it that way. Guess when I bought my new desktop, I should have installed XP over the Vista.
