I'm sure this probably no big deal, but I still want some info just in case. I'm doing a month homestay with host family in Japan. My father died four years ago. Is there anything I should be aware of when I explain this to them?

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. In fact, they probably won't question you very much after they find out.

You are under no obligation to bring it up, but if the subject does come up, there is nothing you need to watch out for. Buddha Smoker is correct - they will probably say "I'm sorry to hear that" or the like, and leave it at that.

I've encountered the situation before with a Japanese acquaintance who can hardly speak Japanese. I want to know how to say it.

It's either それは残念です(sore wa zan'nen desu) or ご愁傷さまです (goshuushou sama desu). I think that the latter would be better for deaths and such.

You can also use "ki no doku desu" which means something like "I'm really sorry to hear that."
