Use of 流れています

i just saw this question in a text book.
あなたの国では店の中や駅でどんなアナウンスが流れて いますか．

my question is whether this was a normal way of using 流れています？ do announcements flow/stream out ? i know English has some weird terms as well.... like slipping into a coma for example.
