Hi All,
What is the use of と in following sentence.
For context おたね's son 一郎 has been called to go up to the front by the army.

おたねは、一郎に何か良くないことでもおきていなければいいが、と胸を痛めていた.

I get the feeling of the sentence is

Otane felt in his heart that Something bad is going to happen to Ichiro,It would have been good if it didn't happen (to be called by the army I presume)

Does the と express the feeling from the heart?

よろしくお願いします

おたねは、「一郎に何か良くないことでもおきていなければいいが」、と思って胸を痛めていた.

Recognize it now?

Thanks mikesan,
おたねは、「一郎に何か良くないことでもおきていなければいいが」、と思って胸を痛めていた. makes it a lot clearer.

Otane thought, "something bad is going to happen to ichirou, it would be better if he didn't have to go" and was worried.

Is the でも in this case make it like the English "something bad or another?
Also is the が used as he is expressing reason or cause for his thought?

Thanks

You're on the right track, but look more carefully at the verb tense and try it again.

The が is just the "but" が, I believe, with the part afterwards left unstated. This is pretty common. Here, I think it just emphasizes the speakers worried state.

You're on the right track, but look more carefully at the verb tense and try it again.

Is it the fact that because the last verb is past tense that ichirou has already left? or the bad thing might have already happened?

Otane thought, "something bad has happend to ichirou, it would be better if he hadn't left" and became worried.

use of と in sentence

Look veeeeery closely. There's no "go" there.

Are you sure Otane is a "he"?

No if he is a man I'm not sure I'm just guessing.

I'm think I'm confusing myself now.

おたねは、 Otanne

「一郎に何か良くないこと to Ichirou bad thing

でも however ?

おきていなければいいが」, Good if it didn't occur

と思って Thought and

胸を痛めていた was worried.

So your right there is no Going. What is the demo doing

....isn't happening...

Otane worriedly thought, "I hope nothing bad is happening to Ichiro."

Or any of a dozen variations which mean the same thing.

Thank you all for your patience and help, I was stuck on the idea that the event in おきていなければいいが was chirou being called to the front. and she wishing that had not happened.

Ahhh Learning Japanese....With each day there is new hope...
