Hi,
Does anyone know how I can find a homestay family in Tokyo fairly quickly? I had arranged for myself and my younger brother to stay with my friend's mother, but I think she is sick and will not be able to host us. We are arriving in Japan on Dec 26 and will return on Jan 7.

Me:
- 26 year old male
- Graduate student (math)
- Studied Japanese for 4 years as an undergraduate
- I've studied in Japan and stayed with a host family twice

My brother:
- 20 year old male
- Undergraduate student (Asian studies)
- Just started Japanese language
- Never been to Japan

As a good older brother, I want to find a family to stay with for a low price since we are both students. There are several attractions I want to take him to, but I want to have several days with him in Akihabara since we both like anime, video games and electronics. We would also like to be able to experience New Years with a Japanese family. We are definitely willing to pay for all our food and travel plus a little extra to the family. We'll also offer any help they want, especially language or even with kids in the daytime. Thank you.

Just wanted to let you know that I have seen this. I do not live in the Tokyo area, nor near it, really, so am afraid I cannot help. I just hoped to keep you encouraged at the moment. Hang in there !

I don't know how many homestays you are going to find on your own terms (ie: allowing both of you, and the dates you will stay) but if you are really in a bind there are many hostels in Tokyo that only run you around $15 a day.

It will be especially hard to find a host family during that time, since it will essentially overlap the entire new year holiday. Most people will either be out of town visiting their own families, or their house will be filled with relatives. You're probably better off on a short-term guest house or hostel, since this is only for two weeks.

Either way, good luck

😌
Whew, after some searching things turned out as good as could be. We found a place to stay in Akihabara, the section of Tokyo I want my brother to see the most. Thanks for the replies.

Glad things turned out alright for you, Have a great trip!
