Understanding what I read

So i'm pretty confident at reading Hiragana and katakana now but the problem is i have no idea what the word im reading means, whats the best way to go about this? should i just Google the words every time i read them untill i remember or is there a better way?

Have you been using a textbook or something to learn the language? Or have you just been learning some of the characters used to write the language?

It's not just picking out individual words, it's also grammar. Actually without grammar you'll start to find it hard to pick out the individual words (parse sentences) in some cases. Get a beginner's textbook and/or try online sources like Tae Kim or Erin's Challenge.
