U.S. bans on Japanese media

I would like to know if there are any bans on Japanese Media/Entertainment in the USA.
Does the USA(or did they ever have) have rules on which animes/mangas could be brought over. If something was brought over how were they to be 'edited' or what not.

Trying to do a research paper but can't seem to find anything on this topic. I just rememeber hearing about it a few years ago.

As far as I know the only ban is on any kind of lolicon. I've read it about it on another thread on this forum. LINK.

The famous story I know is a story of a robot anime, Gundam, about a military deserter is censored in the US.
Probably many Asians associate the famous cat-like robot, Doraemon, after seeing a character, Broadband, in FCC. It might be just a rumor that the reason why no doraemon in the US is the main charcter is too dependent boy, though.

In Japan its acceptable to show full frontal male nudity in anime on tv, in the US its not, and they usually add digital underwear or blurr it out.

I remember that from Dragonball for example.

The same thing applies to womens chests unless its a special order channel, like the anime network or the funimation channel. Because even adult swim which usually leaves anime uncensored will edit these things.

The dvd releases are always uncut though.

Do you have any more information on this Gundam story. That would be really suck-*** if either the gov't or the US distribution company took that out. Really lame. I remember the Robotech animes had stories with complex stories as well.

that would be a really lame, lame, lame reason for not porting Doraemon.
That character on the F#@k the fCC(Steve Earle song name) site looks just like Doraemon. Except it's got ears and a really creepy voice. I wonder if the creators of Doraemon can sue?

Was it in the OVA Gundam Wings: Endless Waltz too?
Because the US government condemns desertion since they need many soldiers to continue their war politics?
Could be true, since the US media also banned Godzilla vs King Ghidora (1991) because the movie displayed the US soldiers as dummies and villains.

I don't know why Doraemon isn't popular in the West. In whole EastAsia, Doraemon has a huge fandom.

Doraemon isn't even available direct to video to US audiences.
That is, it is available in Japanese,
but no dubbed or even subtitled.
I remember pre-Pokemon and way before the Anime Network there was all sorts of anime that was released in the States that were direct to video.

The very first ever Godzilla was finally released in its original form a couple years ago. I havn't seen it yet, but from what I understand any notion of it being an anti-atomic bomb movie (which I heard it was) was written out of the original release 40-50? years ago. It's censorship of the pocket book. The large corporations want to sell as much as possible so things get watered down and uncontroversial. Sometimes things seep through or if it seems possible to make lots of money it'll get released.

I heard a similar strange story about a movie version of the book Animal Farm.

it is interesting to see if the anime/manga influence on kids is provocative.

it is sad to hear the pokemon card dealing is prohibited in certain countries, not because pokemon is from Japan, but I don't know the difference between stock exchange and the card dealing. I fully understand each country/culture should retain its cultural/religious code, though.

I first thought the movie "Battle Royale" (based off the novel written by Koushun Takami) was banned, but soon found out that it isn't. Supposedly Toei has unreasonable distribution terms for the film, and no company will sign to release it.

Many tax payers in Aomori would be glad if the local govenment cut tax after they sell the offical Anna-chan goods. But I don't live in Aomori or am not anime/manga advocate, so I don't have anything to say more.
Anna-chan is a copy-right protected one, so you would be arrested if you're living in Japan and produce the goods without permission.

-anything on tv must be pg13 at most.
-no kiddie crap
-anything else that is not criminal (i.e., real rape, kiddie porn) is completely ok.

when i was a kid (13), my friend's older brother had a 'cartoon' that was from japan. From my recollection, it was uratsukedoi or something like that.... pretty disgusting stuff but legal in all states BY FEDERAL LAW.
on that note: states make their own policies as well, but that is for you to research.

I don't think so but than again I don't watch much tv now days and I just have a couple of tv shows I enjoy. However I do remember when "Sailor Moon" the cartoon anime became popular here they changed some things. Like Uranes and Neptune instead of being lesbian lovers they had them be "close cousins" and more than likely took out some violence stuff as well since it was aired on Cartoon Network. There is however an Anime Network and I don't think they censure stuff and same thing for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network since they have that stuff come on later.

Totally correct. My brother is very big into anime (more than me) and he buys anime DVDs all the time and they're always the original and even have extra stuff on there. He mostly gets the stuff that has the anime in both Japanese and English languages.
