My sister and her boyfriend are going to Japan in a few days. She has asked me to help her translate a few phrases into Japanese. I'm stucked with translating them, and would like some help.

Getting around

How to go to this place?
この所はどうやって行きますか?

Can we walk there? How long will it take?
歩いて行って到着できますか?どうのぐらいかかりますか?

We have JR railway pass, can we take the JR line there?
ジャパンレールパスを持っていますが、ここでジャパンレールに乗ってもいいですか?

Dining

Where can I find cheap and good food? How to go there?
安くて美味しい食べ物はどこにありますか?そして、どうやって行きますか?

What is the recommended dish here?

What is the specialty here?

Which is your favorite?
好きなのはどちらですか?

Can I takeaway this?
持って行ってもいいですか?

Buying souvenirs

How much does this cost?
いくらですか?

Is there any storage requirements for this?

Keep in a cool place, away from direct sunlight
Keep refrigerated
Keep frozen
No storage requirement

What is the expiry date for this?

1 Day 一日間
1 Week 一週間
1 Month 一ヶ月間
1 Year 一年間

Can I bring this back to Singapore? I will reach Singapore on 11 Aug 2008.
これを持って帰国してもいいですか?8月11日に帰国します。

Did you mean what means of transportation or the directions and route for getting there ?

If it's the latter, being slightly shorter these may also be convenient :)...
They have a guidebook, though, right ??

1. そこへの行きかたを教えてください。

2.そこへはどう行けばいいですか? etc...

Noted. Thanks.
If they don't know Japanese, though, they should use much more simple phrases and sentences in my opinion. If the question becomes too involved, the person trying to help may either get the impression they are being used for language practice or the answers will either come back in long complicated responses.

So just as one example, すみません、XXXに行きたいんですが。。。 is very, very natural for "Could you please tell me how to get there..." And the native will most likely either attempt the English or walk you in person. Look enough like a confused tourist. All anyone needs to know is the place name.

Pointing all the while of course... -- こちら?、あちら?近い?、遠い?。。。😌

Actually, they plan on printing out the sentences and translations, and use the printouts to 'communicate'. But never mind, they're already in Japan (they went to Japan this morning).
