World-renowned toilet maker Toto released a new Washlet model whose bidet feature can be controlled by smartphone.

The product, unveiled in August, was developed to meet surging demand for contact-free solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Company officials said the toilet seat can be operated without the need to touch buttons, thereby catering to those who feel uncomfortable about strangers' coming into contact with them, too. The new model from Toto's Washlet Apricot P line is fitted with a toilet lid that opens automatically. Aside from bidet and bowl cleaning functions, the toilet generates a flushing sound to mask embarrassing bowel noises. The functions can all be accessed by a smartphone. Users need to download Toto's dedicated app and scan a QR code around the toilet bowl's remote control to connect. According to company representatives, the new model is intended especially for small establishments, such as restaurants and clinics.

The manufacturer is set to launch a new toilet for home use this August that can analyse various aspects of a user's stool, including volume and firmness. Touted as a first in Japan, the toilet features a scanner embedded in the bowl that collects data on bowel movements, which can then be monitored through a specialised smartphone app. It was developed in response to rising interest in gut health and appeals to a growing market of health-aware consumers by integrating wellness tracking into everyday bathroom use.

A sensor module is installed next to the warm-water cleaning nozzle inside the toilet bowl, operating on a principle similar to barcode scanning. It shines a light onto the stool falling into the toilet, allowing the system to measure its properties. When a user sits on the seat, the scanner's cap opens and the unit activates. After the measurement, the data is automatically sent to the smartphone app. The system classifies stool into seven shapes and hardness types, such as granular, banana-shaped or liquid, along with variations in surface texture, and further assigns one of three colour categories: ochre, brown or dark brown. Stool quantity is categorised as high, medium or low. The app displays this data, allowing users to track frequency and condition via a calendar and receive personalised lifestyle advice based on trends in their bowel movements. According to a Toto survey, while 76% of users check their stool condition after defecation, only 6% record the information digitally.

That was my first thought. If it included operation controls just think of the hijinks that would ensue.

When Tesla vehicles first came out years ago, somebody back at the office pranked us by turning on the AC on full while we were test driving it and overriding our actions when we tried to fix it.

There is no way that information will not be collected and sold to anyone and everyone! I bet they start getting advertisements for dietary supplements or hygiene products not long after they set it up. Also, how will it know who is who? Will you have to login to use the toilet? Imagine those helpdesk calls!

A tiny, desktop toilet! Can I see a market for that? 🤔
 
I can see the stool analysis function being useful in hospitals and nursing homes. For years, people have recognized potential for the toilet as a great data collection point for health monitoring.

I think it's like most things these days...it can be very useful and even lead to some good outcomes, but connect it to the internet and the potential for it to turn into a Dr. Hyde version of itself is too large to ignore.
