Tips to stop smoking

Well, the best way is to actually WANT to seriously quit. If you're doing it because someone says you should, it's going to be much harder. There are of course patches/gums etc., but they have varying degrees of success...plus can be expensive. Depending on how much you smoke, I know of people who have had great success by switching to regular chewing gum...others just avoid the smell if at all possible, as well as other smokers.

If you know me, you'd know that the opinions of others impact me in no way whatsoever. So this is actually me wanting to quit.

I dont really want to, actually, but I think that I should, since I dont want to be dead in my 50s.

Not Easy !

Staying away from other smokers was a big thing for me. I hibernated home for about 3 months eating pack after pack of life savers. Will power seems be the key!
Best of luck on a hard battle!

Life savers. I love those. Why didnt I think of that?

I finally quit smoking after reading a detailed article in a medical journal about smoking-related diseases. An illustrated article. Extinguished my last stub and abstained ever since.

Apart from life savers I recommend gum and plenty of physical exercise.

I can tell you that it was nearly imperative for me to not drink alcohol. Having a few drinks was the one thing that would make me crave a cigarette unbearably. Stress is another one, but how easy is it to avoid that? Other than that, the steam bath that is summer in south Louisiana kept me from wanting to smoke. I had to go outside to do it, and I found that it just wasn't worth it. This is a problem if you live in a comfortable climate, or can smoke inside, however.

Good luck with it. I haven't had a cigarette in about 3 months, so I'm past the hard part. For the first few weeks just remember that it will get easier, and you don't want to have to go through those first few weeks again. Again, good luck, and hang in there! 👍

This may sound harsh...but just take your cigs....rip them to pieces...throw them in the trashcan...and think about all that money you lost with those stupid things that are worth ****!!!really...cigarettes have NO USE...NONE...all that crap is just in your head  you DON'T need cigs to feel better...that's just something your mind made up...and your body got addicted to it.Eat some gum...that should set your mind to other things.I had the biggest luck with my dad lol...he would beat the crap out of me if I smoked...guess having a dad in the military does have some use ne ? 😌

I pretty much had to quit, because I decided to move out of my Dad's house at the time, and I wouldn't be able to afford to live on my own if I still smoked. One thing that helped me out was buying a bag of Dum dums. I ate them like mad, but it did help, especially them having a stick and all.

And once you quit, stay quit! I have quit for about a year now, and I decided to get a pack of smokes for old time's sake. Bad idea! Me and my girlfriend (who also quit a little before me) started smoking them a little bit when we had some drinks or were bored or whatever, but then we started smoking them more and more. We hit our 2nd pack, and I am putting my foot down, no more after this one.

Yeah, once you start down the road again, you'll have to go through the hell of quitting again. Every time that I have started again (I think it's been about 4 of those) it's been because I remembered something was good about it, and wanted to know what that thing was. You know, like romantacizing smoking. Be very wary of that feeling, that nostalgia.

I just quit cold turkey. I know some people are all for that weaning stuff, but I just put them down. Of course, I think I took up biting my nails again in the place of smoking... ☝

A pack of cigarettes and around 5 small cigars a day. It took me a few months: I started to wait longer in the morning before getting one. It's a drug but also a habit of having something between our fingers and our lips. When you want to smoke, before lighting keep it for a while between your fingers or your lips; at the beginning it will be 3 minutes, later 10 minutes, etc... At the end of the day, willpower and all these tricks will reduce your consumption.

One day your first cigarette will be after lunch; you'll smoke only 4 or 5 a day... When you arrive at one or two a day, stop buying a pack because without one, it's easier to resist. At this point, ask people around for a cigarette; some do not like it, I used to pay for my cigarette!

Avoid drinking too much coffee, it goes so well with cigarettes... I remember reading that licorice is used in the production of cigarettes and, as I have seen others doing it before, during those months I chew licorice sticks. It really helps!

When you arrive at your single cigarette/day and you finally decide to quit, the first 2-3 weeks are tough but think about your health and how stupid smoking is...

Start now!

Thanks for all the tips.

I never smoke constantly. Usually, the most I smoke is during conventions and gigs, but in everyday life, I'll smoke maybe 3 cigs every week or so.

I just want to be able to not have these cravings. I started doing the oral-fixation tricks, in just holding my cigs, and placing them to my lips, but not lighting them, and it was really working. Until I walked outside and smelled smoke from someone else.

Grr...

A friend of my dads has quit smoking a million times but he would always go back to his cigs. Finally a little while ago he got a cold that would not go away so he went to the doctors. The doctors told him his health was so bad because all the smoking he was doing (he was a really really bad chain smoker) He also said that if he didn't quit smoking he would die, of a silly cold. So he had to quit then, and if he starts again, well next time he gets a cold we'll be visting him in intensive care or going to another funeral.
