What would it be like if, in the past, near or distant, we had the internet and had a forum quite similar to this one? What threads would be started? I propose a game! Just post a date and your "thread" from that time, and the next guy *or girl* will give a reply, and then start a new "thread" and so on and so forth.

October - 1985

Nintendo has released a new "platformer" game for their Nintendo Entertainment System. Super Mario Bros. It involves a plumber named "Mario" who, through jumping on top of his enemies, progresses through many beautiful levels. This game looks to be promising, anyone here played it?

OK, the game looks pretty, but it'll never catch on. A plumber doesn't make a good hero! And did you notice that Madonna is at No 1 with 'Like a Virgin'? She'll be a two hit wonder as well!

Anyone going to Woodstock next week? We're taking the bus, and plenty of beer! See you there?

Nah!

It's only in some little farmer's field fer chrissake!

Nobody's gonna go there! ... I got better things to do - and I've got nothing to wear!

Say!

Why don't we go somewhere really different for our holidays next year?

Let's save up and try ..... Poland?

Maybe, but I've been hearing that there's been a lot of storms over there! The Germans are even calling it a Blitzkrieg. I'd suggest a quieter place, maybe France?

July, 1492

Italian sailor and mapmaker Christopher Columbus has persuaded queen Isabella to allow him a charter to find a water route to China, by sailing west. Personally, I think this man is an idiot, he'll surely sail his ships to the edge of the world and fall right off, taking all those poor men with him. Anyone else care to share their opinions?

In my eyes he is a genious. He must try or he won't be sure if he can make it or not. I'm sure he will make it!

Egypt has a new ruler. It's Cleopatra. Finally there is a women leading this country. Do you think she is a good ruler or not?

Cleopatra? I dunno! Maybe I'm something of a neanderthal, but I'm not much for having a woman running a country. Too emotional to handle the job if you ask me. I've heard she's been seeing some loser from another country named Marc Antony on the sly. A ruler isn't supposed to have time for that sort of nonsense! And what's with all that damn mascara she wears? Looks like a freaking raccoon! Sheesh!

1964: I've heard rumors about some band from England coming over here to play on The Ed Sullivan Show. Damn! What's the name of that group, The Buggers or something. Supposed to be hot stuff, even with all that hair and those funny looking suits they wear. Got kids here worked up in an absolute froth. Probably just a fad that won't last long.

I believe they're called The Beatles. I don't know what the world's coming to, putting people with regional accents on television, and from Liverpool of all places! They should get hair cuts and proper jobs. I blame it all on Elvis Presley - he should have stayed in the army!

September 1599

At the new Globe theatre, I saw a performance today of a wonderful historical play, Julius Caesar, by a Mr William Shakespeare. Perhaps you have heard of him - they say he has been writing plays for some years now, and they are certainly very fashionable.

Ahh, yes! Willy Shakespeare! I've heard of the gent! Quite talented writer! By jove, Lady Tsuyoiko, I think I might have seen you at that show you mentioned. Might i say you looked very fetching! As for the play, magnificent! I think this Shakespeare fellow might have himself a long and distinguished career!

1984: Two brainy guys out in California, I think their names are Jobs and Wozniak, holed up in a garage invent a personal computer. They gave it a name....Apple! Good Lord! How stupid is that? They'll never get anywhere with that!
:D

Naming a their personal computer after a fruit sure does sound stupid. I don't think they'll ever really become popular.😌 Now if only they'd invented something useful, like a smaller way to carry music!:p

This man named Martin Luther sure is stirring up some trouble, even had the Pope excommunicate him! Now he's gone and written this 95 Theses and had the nerve to pin it up on a church door. When will this lunatic ever see that there's no way anyone ever even consider breaking from the Roman Catholic Church?

Several points.

I agree that I have heard of this man and the controversy that surrounds him. But should we truly have concern about him and his activities, based on (partly your own) rumour spreading?

Tell us - can you give sources for your claim?

To what "gal" do you refer? Is she availablefor comment? Or do we simply take your word for it?

You also should realise that irresponsibly (IMO) calling anybody a "lunatic" is libellous and could be regarded as a severely punishable offence in many quarters.

If I had my way ... I'd have people like you thrown out of their cottages!

Please, Clawn, attack your posts with more seriousness - and, unless you're prepared to offer us all, subtantiative proof of your claims - pray, do not post at all!

(BTW - Martin Luther just happens to be my brother! He's pretty pee'd off with your post, too! It's turning him to drink! Dammit!)

Sincerely,

Off with their heads! I am quite certain that the Spanish shall remain our sworn enemies. I sincerely doubt that there will ever come a time when any Englishman will visit that godforsaken land in the spirit of friendship!

Our new pharoah is a heretic! This man not only changes his name from the respectable Amenhotep to some made-up name Akhenaten, he asks us to believe that the gods we worship are false! He claims that there is only one god, that he is incorporeal, and that we can only contemplate him through Nature! He uses the sun to represent this false god! How are we to worship a god that doesn't even have a face! If our own gods do not exist, then who causes the Nile to flood? Who safely delivers our children if not Isis? Who escorts our pharoahs to the afterlife if not Horus? We must overthrow this imposter!
