I'll add my recommendation here... this is one of the best films I've seen! A great film which deals equally well with both interpersonal relationships/issues and technical/philosophical issues about space travel... well animated, and a GREAT soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto (who won an Oscar for the soundtrack to the film "The Last Emperor")!

A world that strangely familiar to our own?
Strange, when I see the world of The Wings Of Honneamise, I'm not reminded at all our own world. The world of The Wings Of Honneamise look more like one of those worlds you usually find in Japanese R.P.G., or at least like the ones you would find in one of Hayao Miyazaki's works.
Though there are some things that is quite familiar and resemble the R-7 (the craft that launched Vostok), N.A.S.A. lifting body crafts, and so on.
Anyway. The opening scene in the music video for Muse's Sing for Absolution do remind me of a scene in The Wings of Honneamise, when they rushed to launch the rocket in the middle of a cold weather before the enemy country captures the whole launch complex.
