the common is the popular?

I was looking through the jref site, Maciamo's post telling all about the stuff you can do on jref, i clicked on quick links and members list.

I found out that the ones with the highest rep are the ones that are commonly on the forum, is there a divide with the popular folk with high rep and are online a lot, and then the small group of members that are the few that join and post small and leave.

Is this forum divide between 2 groups, really popular and the newbies?

Has this difference grown to a degree over the past months?
because less and less new people are staying for the long haul while the old faces are still staying strong?

I tend to find that the ones with the higher rep points are the one that move from sub-forums rather than stay on the one forum. If you look on the j-pop there are a few who have been here for a while, but with the low rep because they will only really post and read j-pop rather than anywhere else. The names you recognise the most are those that move about and will post on most of the forums.

yeah, totally agree, the ones that lets say post in j-pop they'll stay in that section because its what they know, but should we encourage members to move around the different topics?

There have been several posts and threads trying to get new members to post elsewhere. I think it is down to how people feel about putting their thoughts into words. There are some subjects that could put people off by the very nature of what is being discussed. They could feel embrassed to post in a thread where they might feel stupid compared to what others have said. I say what they have to say is just as valid as what I have to say. A fresh perspective can really help, but some people are shy whether they are in a social situation or an online one. Others just might not have the time, such as Chus, or English is not a language that they can communicate easily in. The question is how do you get members to move from their favourite forum, other than posting threads that might catch their attention?

What about reviving old threads that were rounded and general for the group (theres not so much these days), but just maybe bumping them forward to the new folk.

Im agreeing on the fact that theres been many threads question the new folk and why they dont stay for longer and for more.

Theres a instance from when they join and then search for their first thread to reply that they're making they're mind up about the forum, undoubtedly the decisive moment to whether someone stays is there first reply from another member.

But are we to be nice to the new so they stick around, but then again when is someone bad to a new member.
If we became more welcoming we would be handing out money.
A major factor of a new member staying online is the threads they first see, maybe us the old faces, its up to us to make an effort to the new?

Well, I think people are friendly, and I don't really know but I haven't seen anyone say anything bad to a new member... I think whether people carry on to post a lot, or just leave soon, it depends on if they get responses to their own posts... I mean, if somebody replies directly to your post, you feel pleased because they took the time to read it and think of a response... whereas even if people say nothing bad, but if they run past your post without acknowledgement, it feels like you're posting into a void.

But I don't think this happens much on this forum... it is a nice size of forum because it is big enough to have a good cross-section of posters, but small enough that you always notice when someone is new and it seems that people are pretty good at acknowledging new posters.

It's true that people tend to stay within certain sub-forums sometimes... partly because there's so many threads it's difficult to read them all, so it's tempting to only read areas that you have a special interest in plus threads that you yourself posted in recently.

i agree with your simile to void, its quite sad when people skip your post, i make an effort to be friendly to the new folk, but thats the way i am, not everyone is friendly and as welcoming as some would like.

I also took a look at the members list. My biggest impression was that it could do with a little pruning. People who haven't posted in over 2 or 3 years, for example. I haven't seen a list so needlessly bloated since the last time I wrote to Santa Claus.

that list does need a bit of pruning but if they did take of a lot of them members jref would lose about 3000 on its list, a lot of members signed up but not used.
Maybe that list should be pruned a bit, (we cause enough noise, maybe we'll be heard).

I happen to be a theist, and that would make me a non-atheist, yet I too find it wonderful not to judge folks negatively from what a book tells me. Furthermore I find it even more wonderful to find reasons to judge folks positively from what a book tells me if any. Nevertheless that does not mean that I would judge a person negatively just because his or her name was never mentioned in any book.

One question; is being an atheist a necessary requirement to be level headed ? I would think there are some hard-core individuals of the faiths whose ultra-fundamental views make the whole batch look bad, but I would say the figures satisfying the two conditions

1) the person knows the bible (or relevant religious text) fairly well
2) the person understands spirituality within one's religious context

are extremely low due to the fact that number of 1) is low to begin with; and that more knowledge of the bible (...) is in direct negative correlation to 2). Hence there seems to be little factual support for your thesis, "Atheism means fairness" as this has the logical equivalent of "Bigotry means theism." ;-)

Thank you, Tsuyoiko, personally. I only hoped the mild, implied, suggestive reprimand got lifted from the good ole' vine.
I think you a-thiest folks are nice people for choosing to be one, not due to being a-theist. I tend to believe both choices were born out of fairness. I'm just being partial due to the unfairness upon the church in general.
