Text or Phone?

This concerns the use of mobile phones. It seem from what I have read or herad is that Europeans are more likely to text message someone than North Americans. A friend of mine in the states says it seem to be rare thing. Most people talk to him on the phone, even if it is a short thanks, or question. Is this true or am I wrong?

I usually send text messages to people. It' cheaper that way. I call them only when I need to have an immediate answer.

I do both almost equally, I think. If I want to tell someone something or ask them something and I think they might be busy, I will text. Texting just isn't fast enough for me. I think it's a hassle. Much easier to just hit speed dial and talk than to type out a message on a mobile phone keypad. It just depends on the situation for me.

About the cost: For me, text messaging is extra. To begin with, we have to pay the flat fee of about 49.95/month, and text messaging is an added cost. They have different text messaging packages they can add on to your plan, and it can get pretty expensive.

Texting is a hassle so I only do it if I can't call, if I need to get the information to more than one person, if the info is complicated, or if I'm really bored.

In Japan too, more emails than phone calls. I also prefer writing to speaking.

I rarely text unless I am sitting at a computer. Then I will use an email gateway to send text messages to friends if I need to tell them something.

Otherwise, its hands free bluetooth headset time. Mine is voice activated dial so I don't even need to touch my phone. I really dig the new small ones, the mic's on them are fantastic. My old set-up made me look like a telemarketer when I was walking around the office.

I prefer writing to speaking too, but my plan doesn't include messages also, so I stick with the talking to keep the charges low. Else, I'd be messaging people like crazy for the heck of it.

I never text message, but that is because I think that it is very impersonal! I dislike it when other people do it to me as well.

Too much work to do all that text messaging, especially with those itty-bitty keys! And since a lazy bum, it's not worth worth trying!

Could it be that the people who prefer calling over sending a mail are also those who would easily start a conversation with a stranger in the street, in a pub, etc. ? Could it be that such people are more common in the US and Australia, than in Northern Europe or Japan ? That's how I perceive it from my personal experience and observations.

I mainly text and sms....the reason being that it is cheaper and I quite often just wan to say "hi" and "what's up".......

Although I often ring people up, especially my closest friends and we can talk for hours!!!!! (but then I use the landline phone and not my mobile for my long conversations)

That could probably be a good reason. I'm not really the type to call someone and ask them "what's up?" But if I had used messaging, I wouldn't mind because of the fact that I'm not disturbing them by requiring them to answer the phone.

I used to hate getting text'd on my celly, but that's really changed in the past several months almost to the point of being a close equal w/actually talking.

(Probably due to my recent break-up......yeah, texting sure came in handy)

lol um i like texting people but since i got my celly, it won't let me text..... and i really hate to talk on the phone.... so i say text!!!!!!!

I would agree with that assessment, Mac! Doing the text thing is easy, actually talking to people takes work and, in some cases, can be difficult, especially if you happen to be shy and/or have trouble striking up conversations with people. I like to think I don't have that problem myself. As for my phone, I use it mostly for keeping in touch with relatives and friends when I'm away from the house. I can text, but don't bother with that stuff, talking is easier.

I've never texted in my life, and have no plans to learn how.
