although lockergnome is right to some extent, it seems like his rage (because that's pure rage) is fueled mostly by the fact that this other guy is writing for a publication as big (or bigger than lockergnome's own, and thinking he is the one true computer wiz, he cannot stand to see people that he considers below him to have the same amount of success or more than he has.

I'm not arguing with his content. I'd say it's pretty true what he says. I just think he could've said it less sounding like he's frothing at the mouth and grinding his teeth to dust while typing it. It would've made the whole article sound more valid.

He really didn't have to slam the article that hard either. it does raise some valid points.
It should have had more extensive and documented research though. that is true.

A quick summary of the situation would be

"An average non-techy user of Internet Explorer will get more viruses / trojans than an average non-techy user of Firefox."

which I think few knowlegable people would disagree with.

My advice is "Don't go on the Internet when you've got a bad cold." Cold viruses lead to computer viruses - at least that's what happened to me when in my befuddled state I though it was a good idea to install some ActiveX control ... 😌
 
are you guys pro-firefox or pro-IE? i've got a tech-head friend who uses firefox, but i have two other tech-head friends that think firefox is crap and they use IE. "99% of web sites are designed for IE, so if you use any other browser you can't expect to get the same results" one of them simply put.

Neither. I'm pro-what-works-best-for-certain-situations. I use IE most often for convenience but there are some sites and situations when I use Firefox.

Yeah well that's halfway between just plain wrong and misleading.

Well designed sites aren't designed for a single particular browser. They're designed first to 'current standards' and second to fit with the oddities of commonly used browsers. It's true that you won't get exactly the same results but in the great majority of occasions web sites will display as well or better in Firefox. For example you can use Hotmail with Firefox!

There are two basic exceptions
1. Crap sites that just wont work with anything other than Internet Explorer. There aren't many of these - but there are some.
2. Sites which have 'extra' features that work only with Internet Explorer but also have an 'OK version' for everybody else (for example http://japanese.about.com/mpboards.htm )
 
I'm pro-firefox.. but I'm not one of those preachers with the firefox logo in my sig and all that.

And I agree with everything Paul said..
actually, my site (yeahjapan.com) looks slightly better in firefox because firefox handles dotted lines better imho.

the -only- problem I've had with firefox not showing stuff as well or better than IE on normal pages was some flash content that looked sorta bad in firefox.. but that was in the early betas...

sometimes I have to fire up IE because something like a credit card check-thingy is made only for IE on some pages i buy stuff from. But those problems are diminishing with every new release of firefox.

I came across a page that worked in Firefox but didn't in Internet Explorer. (Not saying whether the page was properly designed or not).
