I noticed that some people never change their avatars and other change them a lot. If you keep the same avatar, why? Why don't you ever change it? If you are an avatar changer, what are your reasons?

I am a changer. I love to mix it up. My favorite avatar was the elephant jumping on the trampoline! That was funny.

If someone wants to add a poll please feel free!

I don't change my avatar because I wouldn't find a better one, also the guy in my ava is Eddy, the "mascot" of Iron Maiden, Eddy the pilot, the trooper, the rocker, the creature with half his guts out holding his heart, the organic robot, the reaper, the mummy, the madman, the experimental monster, and this is only like half of it :D
Eddy is uber!

What an interesting thread!

My story is a little sad, I suppose, so I'll just outline it here. I don't ever change mine from an elephant because it has such a significance for me. I joined the forum just a week after my late Mum died from cancer, and it immediately became a great and welcome distraction for me from many painful things.

I chose an elephant because I was searching for a beautiful image to make into cards to thank friends and family for all their thoughts. Mum was born and raised in Africa, and the tremendous image I found (my first of the two avatars I've used here) spoke to me not only of great beauty and dignity, but also somehow signified her battle in her last few years of life, as well as her passing.

The great elephant has always been a part of my very small presence here on Jref, and I'm loathe to change to anything else now (though I do always have ideas!) My present avatar was the first photo ever taken of a baby elephant in the womb, and once I saw it I just had to have it - it seemed to resonate about how I want to live my life in the future, on top of the obvious meaning for me.

It's just a minor point, I s'pose, but I've been a member of various forums over the years, and know first-hand that sometimes help or advice you've given people mean much much more than you'd ever expect, and even though they couldn't remember your username, perhaps, or your avatar exactly, they sometimes do remember the two in tandem.

It's so lovely to hear from these folk occasionally, just to know that some little help was appreciated or (more importantly!) that some small part of life had actually got better. I suppose it's selfish, but I love to get those messages.

And did I mention? My time here's now got me addicted to elephants lol! Hehe, watch out for my next avatar (I've got a few in the bank for when I can next get posting here much!)

made of sentimentality :)

I like to change mine every day or two.

At the moment, my Windows Vista has decided I can not have access to my folder of avatars? what? I tried changing the properties for access, and it just won't let me in LOL. One of these days I will have to break down and read my book on using Vista. For the moment, I'm stuck with my waving finger guy.

😊

Lol Uncle Franky - I think your waving finger guy is the personification of Windows Vista itself!!

Mos, I had no idea your mother's passing was so recent when you joined Jref. You and I joined about the same time, about a year ago now. I hope things are getting easier for you now. Your mother was lucky to have such a devoted son. What a nice story about the elephant - I didn't know it had such a significance for you. That's an amazing picture of a baby elephant in the womb!

I started out with pictures of local places for my avatar, but after posting on the whaling forum and in other animal-related threads, I've decided to try to find different animal avatars to hopefully spread a feeling of compassion for animals. A friend just send me some animal pictures (the hamster was one of them), so I've got a collection started!

Elephants are very special animals....sorry to hear they are going to start killing them in South Africa. Thank-you for sharing MOS . Sarapva, what a great idea.👍

Come on, we all use avatars, well most of us. I noticed a few people don't. What's the story behind your avatars? 🙂

I also like to change my avatar a lot, even though I the other admin only has an admin logo as an avatar... should I get one as well?

It's fun to browse the forum, to see some of the crazy, normal, ugly, funny avatars.

@ Sarapva san Thank you so much for everything, and not least sharing a little of my little story here. It's just a small one, my humble one, but all the world is made of little such stories, hardships. We all struggle with that, but in you (and through Jref!!) I've met a friend who appreciates that, and understands it more than many. Thank you!! 🙂

@ Goldie san I'm deeply sorry to hear about the elephants in South Africa, but many thanks for the heads-up. I think probably that that's a topic for another thread (I mean for comment by me) and...I just don't know what to say else, except that vegetarianism is something that i think about embracing daily for ethical reasons...

@ DB san I think it's fantastic you show your face!! You're a very good-looking guy (I'm sure you know that and are very popular in Japan!!) and to see your pic adds a really 'human' element to not only the job of admin, but your posts too! :)

My avatar is sort of a tribute to Pans Labyrinth. I choose the Pale Man because I thought he was a cool character, repulsive and grotesque but I absolutely loved it. I had to pay respects to Guillermo Del Toro. I think he, along with others, are helping to raise the standards of fantasy films.
So, my avatar is a 'tip of my hat' to great imagination, imagery, and high fantasy.

I can't wait to see what he does with the new Hellboy movie :-)

My avatar is also my "buddy icon" for my Flickr personal account ("buddy icon" is Flickr's term, not mine). It is our cat Hemingway, who lived from 1989 to 2007. The "buddy icon" for our joint account is Margo, who lived from 1989 to 2005. I do not change my avatar (or our Flickr "buddy icons") because Margo and Hemingway were special to us. My family had two cats when I was young. They were great cats, but we did not have them long. I first met Ron, and also Margo and Hemingway, in 1995, so I knew Margo for about ten years and Hemingway for about twelve. Our new cat Gracie (who is curled up in a chair beside me) is special in her own way, but we will never forget Margo & Hemingway. I have posted photos of all three in the "post your pets" thread.

Saddened to hear about your loss, mos-san. I understand it very well, because many of the parents of my friends are aged. I am hearing sad news in increasing frequency. My mother is in her 70s, so I intend to do the best I can to let her know I love her before it's too late!

Regarding avatars, I have changed mine frequently with change of season -- just the thing that any Japanese obachan (middle-aged woman) likes to do. My current one is a bear warming himself (herself?) in "kotatsu," a winter essential in the old days. The "electric stove" type is still popular today.
Please read the Wikipedia article on it for further explanation:
Kotatsu - Wikipedia

It is high time for me to switch to a "spring" avatar, but I've run out of pics and gifs--having used most during the past 3 to 4 years I've been a member here. 😌
Maybe I'll go with photos I've taken.

This is only the third avatar I have had since I joined. My first was from the set folders, but I soon got bored of that and I had one of my cats as my avatar for a while. Sadly Winston T. Cat (aka Psychocat) passed away last February, so I changed it to my current one after a while, along with my sig. I had planned on changing on a regular basis, but to tell the truth I forget.

A most interesting thread. As an insanely devoted fan of Pink Lady, I decided that it would be lots of fun for folks here to see a different pic of Mie and Kei as my avatar every month. At present, I have 48 avatar pics of the Ladies (which I switch on the first day of each month) and I'm working on adding more as I'm of the highly biased opinion that you can NEVER get enough of Pink Lady!

:-)

Now thats devotion :D
I'd love to change my current one for other IM avatars, but I can't find another one that is "attacking" the viewer.
A few days ago I saw a picture of Revy from Black Lagoon pointing a gun towards the viewer, but its not Iron Maiden... well I ordered the manga, so if I'll like it, maybe I'll give that one a shot.

Just to let you know that I've changed my avatar just for March 3, "Hina-matsuri" or the Dolls Festival for girls.

Just FYI, the two dolls are the Emperor and Empress in ancient Japanese imperial court in Tokyo. A full set of Hina-matsuri dolls make up their entire retinue of ladies-in-waiting, musicians, etc.

My feeling and moment of though do go out to you made of stone san.

I have enjoyed reading all the reasons and such. I think every single one of you would recognize a post made by me even as you were scolling down a page at a high speed, or were to catch it from the far corner of an eye. It never changes, and walks to the tune of These Shoes Were Made for Walking. . . without the negative overtone.

Yeap folks, this one is a special gift from good ole Uncle Frank. One that I truly appreciated at the time, and still do. AND...me being as 'cave man as I am about PC and IT stuff...it'll most likely never change.

But...who knows.... (smilie attached here...well, just picture it in your head...)

:-) there's the smile I pictured in my head! Thanks for putting that song in my head. It's going to be stuck there most of the day. "These boots were made for walkin'....":sing: The worst part is that it's Jessica Simpson singing it!:p

Uncle Frank - glad to see you finally got passed the finger-waving guy!

I hadn't heard about this - I'll look for some outlets where I can send protest emails (sorry - another thread!).

👍 (Also for another thread!)

Here is a variation of "These boots are made for walking" from earlier days for you, from Nancy Sinatra, the original to my knowledge :

Very funny and from the 60ties, to my knowledge. I heard it then for the first time.

And here are some walking getas as avatar from me, please, clickediclick ;-)
I LOVE getas and have a few, some as presents, fitting to a collected outfit.
One fitting pair does in fact have such colours, in velvet. It goes with a green/golden grassy patterned kimono from Hakata kimono market in Dazaifu, and according accessoires.

(I hope, the avatar works/walks alright, and forwards is my direction indeed. I may nevertheless soon switch back to the sweet "deadly rabbit")

Mine has never changed for to change it I feel would be changing who I am (not that I am an alien!). When I see others' avatars, just as I feel when people see mine, I feel can relate to them and know them in a way and vice versa. When they change it, it's like it's not the same person anymore and it takes some getting used to almost like getting reaquainted with them as weird as that sounds.

Mine will probably remain with me for as long I am a member here.

I agree... I feel that I can identify with my avatar, even though I'm not sure where the image comes from. My avatar is from the JREF stock. All of them were, since I take on the skin of JREF when I come here. It's like slipping into a different reality. The first avatar I had was from Love Hine... and it was fine. But when I started talking about spiritual stuff, I went to the final fantasy avatar... but to my disapointment, someone else had taken that one... and so I chose this one, which I feel is the most apropriate anyway, for all of my interests. :bikkuri:

I love your avatar Derfel! Don't change it!

I've changed mine a few times but I always use a pic of my bunny. When I first joined that was Iris, famous as the beer-loving bunny. This one is Bran, the demon bunny XD
