Stop, end, finish

Hi there,

I'm having some trouble understanding the different words for stop (I did do an internet search before I came here, but the results were a little light).

I know the main ones are yamu, yameru, tomeru and owaru. The problem is, I don't really understand the subtle differences between all these words. I know how to combine them with other verbs, but again, I'm usually not sure of exactly which one to use in a given situation.

I hope someone here can take the time to explain these to me (with examples, if possible, since I really am at quite a loss here).

You left out tomaru, oeru, and shuuryou suru.

Yameru: to stop doing some action or activity.

Tomeru: to halt or stop the motion of someone or something

Owaru: to come to an end, to be concluded

You have to be aware that the first two are transitive verbs and the last is intransitive.

In transitive-intransitive pairings they go like this:

yameru - yamu
tomeru - tomaru
oeru - owaru
