According to the latest news from Japan, radioactive contamination has been found in Milk and Spinach, from the Fukushima prefecture, in samples tested from the 16th to 18th March. What food stuffs could be next?
Government and municipalities are screening more food, I'm very much sure many other vegetables grown in the area will be also reported "contaminated" too.
Actually "shungiku" and "kakina" (do not know their name in English but they are also green vegetables) already turned out to be contaminated too.
But we also have to remember that so far the level of contamination is not the level that affect people's health immediately.
Iodine contaminated milk from Fukushima: If one drinks 1 litre of this milk, one's body got about 33 microsievert radiation.
This is equivalent to 1/20 (5%) of the radiation one gets one's stomach x-rayed at the medical check-up.
Spinach from Ibaraki: if one eat 1kg of this spinach without washing it, one gets about 330 microsievert, equivalent to having one's stomach x-rayed 1/2 time.
It is possible to wash off the iodine and cesium under the running tap water.
One report says that cooking spinach into "ohitashi" (washed/boiled spinach to be eaten with soy sauce) cuts the amount of cesium down to 80 - 50% before cooked.
ツ(According to the article from Asahi Shinbum/ web version of the paper "Asahi")
These indications was given not to say it is no problem to keep eating these food, but simply to make people understand that even if they happen to eat/drink 1-2 times, they should not worry about it.
Those agricultural produces are not going to circulate in the market anyway because agricultural coops (almost all vegetables are going from farm to coop) were instructed not to.
Living in Tokyo and buying food to cook myself, I expect certain shortage of vegetables as many usually came within Kanto area like Ibaraki, Gunma,
Tochigi, and consequently price increase because of the shortage.
