Slacking in Japan: Budget

Hey guys,

How much money do you imagine would be required to backpack it around Japan for one month?

This is for someone who is used to being in the country, speaks the language, and doesn't mind sleeping in a hostel or other cheap places.

Also, for someone who is -already- in Japan, so I won't be able to use the JR Rail Pass.

I do not understand whether my experience is useful because I am a Japanese.


However, I know a method to go on a trip cheaply because I do a trip on a motorcycle in Japan.

I'd check out what youth hostels are around and the costs. Really it comes down to transport (buses?), food (you should know by now what you eat and how much it is) and accomadation.

I'm biting the bullet and using one of my precious 10 days of holiday time to go to friends high school graduation; I attended the school back when they started, so it'll be fun to meet them at the end too.

What bike have you got Hiroyuki? I'm looking to get a 400CC sports bike sometime in the next few months...

Actually, I'm a white collar worker who has trouble getting a week off for sure. However, I plan to drop everything and leave the country!

I see these messages from time to time--- but is it really all that practical to backpack through Japan--- that's something that you hear a lot w/ Thailand or Europe--- but

Japan doesn't seem like a very backpacker-friendly sort of country... you're either in a big city, or you're in something like Shimotsuma Monogatari...

That said, I think the JR Rail pass is too expensive just to buy it to save money over a short time period--- Also, for accomidations, don't forget the somewhat cheap love hotels as well...

If I were you I'd travel through the temples in Shikoku .

I backpacked around Japan for 9 months. Bollocks to those who say you can not do it. I had to work at various places of course to afford my travels because as you know Japan is not the cheapest country in the world. I hitchhiked from Ichinoseki city all the way to Okayama over the course of two weeks and loved it. Later I hitched around Kyushu . Hitchhikiing is not common in Japan, but the people you meet are of course fabulous (they have to be for stopping to pick your sorry *** up!) One of my fondest memories is taking the ferry from Oita to Yokohama. Lot's of shochu with a bloke who was at least my grandfathers age and he was kind. I cannot give you a budget as my time was in 1998 and I have a feeling that things have changed. But it is still possible, just don't spunk your cash on canned drinks, drink water and cheap nasty chu hai instead!

I'd be keen on hitching in Japan.
Just sleep on the side of the road, or a train station with the homeless people, if they can do it, so can you!

Im looking for someone to join me on the beach in Korea this summer. Sleeping on the beach is fun, so you should do that if you are in a coastal area. You could always do your sleeping on whatever transport you take.
What about those special tickets for 11,000yen? They are good for 5 non consecutive days. You could use that for your big long journeys, and stick to hitching the rest of the time.

That way you can travel at night sometimes and use that as a nights accomodation. Heheh is 5 nights sleep enough for that length of time?
Manga Kissa are pretty comfy at times too.

I am also interested in the hostel situation and also wonder if I went on a trip to Japan would it be possible to join japanese affiliate programs and perhaps earn some money that way as well as teaching English. ☝
