I googled a bit and found out that they used to call Miwa Akihiro "Sister boy".

I've heard the word "homodachi" and I myself used the term sometimes but it's out of date☝

Those terms are post-WWII terms that have long been dead since your days in Japan, Frank.

I'm pretty sure there are many slang terms in Japanese to describe them, but male homosexuals are collectively called "gay" (in Japanese) and drag queens, especially older ones, called "o-nee" (from onee-san meaning elder sister).

Recently while in Japan I watched a TV show about transvestites and drag queens who would go into a clinic to get vitiman B12 shots to give them more "energy". (The TV show was more about showing their naked butts). In that show they were called "New Hafu" meaning, I guess, half woman/half man.

Could you please explain, if you know, the context and meaning of the word "New hafu"? And why is the English word "new" used?

As far as I know, 'new half' refers to those who have added 'female' breasts to make a kind of upper half female-like look, with the lower half being male as usual. This medical procedure is fairly new, and having it done as commonly as it is, is fairly new, so. . . new.

Unlike almost all the others, he wore more of a bra-like top. He looked a bit, well, gross? is the right word? Not femine at all, except for the breasts.
