which one is the most used/ correct to indicate a young male person?

おとこのこ

I think しょうねん is more commonly used to refer "youth" or "juveniles" than individual boys.
Or maybe more in a formal context like in a news headlines.

おとこのこ is a colloquial expression for a "boy," whose age is, I think, about 2 - 12 years old.
しょうねん is a formal expression for a young male person, whose age is, I think, about 12 -18 years old.
