JR Central and other operators have announced that, starting 4 October, passengers will be able to book Shinkansen tickets using the LINE app. The service will be available on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, covering the route from Tokyo to Kagoshima-Chuo.
Users add the official account on LINE to make reservations, then pass through ticket gates by scanning a QR code or by using a transit IC card registered to the service. Payment is limited to PayPay. Because the service does not require membership sign-up or credit card registration, the operators aim to expand use among light users who ride the Shinkansen about once a year.
