This is got to be the worst thing I have ever heard. How about next time, if someone doesn't pay before entering the door, we put a time bomb on the door? What is this stupidity...

Utendi, fruendi, abutendi. You do what you wish with your own property.

Hummmm ???

I hope that it gives you a warning before the time runs out !

Is it not ok for people to take a nap there ? ☝
I agree, It is a public bench, so why shouldn't someone be able to sleep on it.

however it seems like the benches are meant as a novelty item, and won't actually be used in public. So could you please post a link to the article so others can read it.

That's going much too far, but I think I understand the motive behind it.

In Japan, occupation of public benches by the homeless had become extreme at one point, with park benches, etc., used as beds. They were occupied not only at night, but used as "homes" for them. These benches were occupied all day long with belongings, etc., and the area reeked with stench from booze, urine, etc. Parks and public spaces, in Shinjuku for example, became places the ordinary people no longer wanted to go.
So, Tokyo and other local governments came up with novelty "bench" ideas. We don't have to "pay" but still find the benches for temporary sitting purposes only. Not comfy for anyone!

Examples are shown in the photos in this Japanese blog:

This is a bit insane... lol To literally have SPIKES shoot out of the bench? I'd imagine you'd end up with people getting injured sometimes. Besides why would I pay to sit down on that. i could just sit with my feet on the bench and sit on the top part of the bench backrest.

It looks like Japan's way is a lot less violent and dangerous of a solution.

They have them in China:

New benches are a pain in the ****

Park officials in China have found a way to stop people from hogging their benches for too long - by fitting steel spikes on a coin-operated timer.

If visitors at the Yantai Park in Shangdong province, eastern China, linger too long without feeding the meter, dozens of sharp spikes shoot through the seat.

The spikes are too short to cause any serious harm - but long enough to prevent people from sitting on them comfortably.

Park bosses got the idea from an art installation in Germany where sculptor Fabian Brunsing created a similar bench as a protest against the commercialisation of modern life.

"He thought he was exaggerating. He didn't foresee that a very practical country like China might actually use them for real," said one critic.

Parks in China suffer from chronic overcrowding at weekends when millions of people try to escape the country's teeming cities.

"We have to make sure the facilities are shared out evenly and this seems like a fair way to stop people grabbing a bench at dawn and staying there all day," said one park official.

Ah, so it was an art installation! That figures!

You've got to check out your sources, Hezam!

The source is a message sent to my email in Arabic,i will ask the sender.

This design is good ! no one can sleep on it.

i think the first design is not to prevent homeless people from sleeping but to have some privacy !

An alarm goes off a few seconds before the user's time is up and the spikes rise.

Haha, there you are with your hot coffee, reading a newspaper and having a bag next to you... you've got 4 seconds!!!

Lol...

I wonder if the spikes bench will work on some people :

In Europe you have to pay 1 euro to pee. So, sharing chairs is raher logical stuff from the same row- make profits from natural human needs.

So if I pay a euro I can pee on the bench too? What else can I get for a euro? Will they soon charge for breathing?

If you capture air in a container, that will become your property and you can, theoretically, sell it. In fact, I heard of people transacting for air originating from exotic places. If there is a greater demand for something than there are supplies, I say it will be sold or hired out.

1 euro to pee is good though,i pay 1 euro to drink pure water so it's logical to pay 1 euro to take that water out ...XD

What if you spend, say, 20 pounds or 40ish dollars on a meal. Should you have to pay the same amount for the toilet? Or just imagine that you had some fancy expensive wine.

This count in kilogram.......XD

Everything has got a price even if it is at our expense
It is a puplic place why should i pay money for sitting?
i think it would be a good idea if they could hire a guard to watch the park in order to prevent any one sleeping on them, that will save us our money and on the other hand the guard will be paid and he will get a life

I can't help but see the irony of someone named "red flower" posting on a thread about benches that shoot spikes up into you...
