saying Hello

Might seem a dumb question. I know the kind of greetings you can say someone at different times of day like 'konnichiwa' or 'konbanwa' and wotnot but one I'm looking for is something a little more casual - kinda like the equivalent of 'salut' or 'hi' that isn't time-dependant. at the minute I have to look at my watch before I open my mouth to greet someone to figure out if it's konbanwa time or oya suminasai! BTW in case you haven't guessed, I spell out stuff phonetically to try & remember it in a kind of pseudo-romaji.
