Its awful to watch. What part of research requires the killing of hundreds of whales a year? I would love to see anyone who takes part in the killing of whales harpooned and drug through the water.
Now, lets start by answering your question. Yes, I have been to and know a few people who work there.Assuming you are living in Nebraska (a state of livestock industry), have you ever entered Slaughter House nearby your house ?
Now, lets start by answering your question. Yes, I have been to and know a few people who work there.
Do you know the manner in which the livestock are killed? Do you think it compares to what is being done to these whales? :?
Now with staying on track, there are some research facilities around here that work with livestock. The animals they use are humanely euthanized. They are not shot in some manner where they are left to suffer for some time.
They also do not use these animals under the false pretense that they are doing research, when in fact they would just kill the animal and package it for wholesale. If these facilities did such a thing in the US, people would go to jail.
Its one thing to kill a whale and truly use it for research. But if you watch any documentary on what the Japanese are doing, they don't conduct a whole lot of research before processing the whale and ship it back to Japan for sale. In fact, they discard most of what would be used for research, because it has no $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ value.
Please, don't compare the highly regulated livestock industry of the US with what is going on in the Japanese whaling industry. There is no comparison.
Astroboy, I'd like to say I am a vegetarian. I have never seen meat processed, nor have I eaten it. The fact that the whaling was obviously done in false pretenses of tissue samples was the point of this topic. If people are doing it for traditional reasons it is one thing, and I am not too sure about that right now.
Yes, it a dietary choice (well, it is my parent's religious choice). I have not said anything about eating of whale meat, because the topic was about false pretenses of tissue samples. I do think that the IWC agreement is outdated.
Congratulations on your 1000th post.
Then again, I'm also concerned about overfishing, which I think is kind of a chain reaction, isn't it?
Nope. I am saying that in the US, we do things humanely. And when that is not the case, there are organizations that uphold the law against those who do not follow them. You can go to prison these days in the US for mistreating an animal.
So you are telling "We are right, but you are wrong" arn't you? Or "We have a right to enjoy veal as we beautifully slaughter calf, but we don't allow you to enjoy the meat which we don't eat."
In the meanwhile, the US "highly regulated" livestock industry .... use sick cow to produce meat products. Did you eat ?
Nope. I am saying that in the US, we do things humanely.
But they are not being scientifically analysed, they are using that as an excuse for a food market. How does slaughtering a species protect it? I'm sure after the years of hunting that the Japanese have done now in the name of "Scientifc reaserch" they should have enough data to actually protect the species instead of tryuing to hunt the animals into extinction.Endangered species must be protected, but the decision must be done on scientific analysis. Not emotion.
But they are not being scientifically analysed, they are using that as an excuse for a food market.
Why is it unreasonable? The whales are really being killed to fill a demand in a market for whale meat, not for scientific research, and you know damn well it is. The science is just an excuse to get meat on a table at some restaurant in Tokyo. Science does not go onto wholesale slaughter of a species and then feed the animals to people after its research.
BBC News - Japan anger over Sea Shepherd 'attack' on whaling shipTHE LEGALITIES OF WHALING
Objection - A country formally objects to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium, declaring itself exempt. Example: Norway
Scientific - A nation issues unilateral 'scientific permits'; any IWC member can do this. Example: Japan
Aboriginal - IWC grants permits to indigenous groups for subsistence food. Example: Alaskan Inupiat
Consuming whale meat is seen by many as barbaric and unnecessary. But the Japanese say eating the meat is part of their culture.
Commercial whaling has been banned since the mid 1980s, but Japan justifies its annual hunt in the name of science.
So how is whaling viewed by the Japanese?
Roland Buerk reports. BBC News - Why whale meat is popular in Japan
That said, in history, if you we're anything other than white, your life was also worth almost nothing. Some things can, and do change for the better.
From Japanese standpoint, research is not top priority, but in order to let non-whaling countries know that certain species are not endangered, Japan is conducting scientific research and reporting, as well as selling the whale meat after reporting. If Japan does not intend to submit the research report, Japanese whalers will Just do Whaling.
But you are telling that research is fake. I think you better revamp your understanding.
At least own up to the fact that there is absolutely no science involved. If there was I think we would have seen them tag at least one whale and study it, or have seen them following whales and NOT hunting them to study behavioral patterns or studying communication or migration habits. What exactly has Japan contributed to the world of scientific whale research that doesn't involve how best to serve them on a bun?
