According to the Japan Meteorological Corporation, cherry trees in Tokyo are expected to begin flowering on 23 March and reach full bloom around 30 March. This is a day earlier than the average flowering date. For the 2024 season, cherry blossoms are expected to start a few days earlier than average. The first cherry trees are expected to bloom in Kochi Prefecture around 18 March and the rest of the country will follow as full blooms make their way north to Hokkaido by around 2 May.

According to the latest forecast by the Japan Weather Association (JWA), cherry blossoms in central Tokyo are expected to bloom from 21 March and reach their peak a week later. The forecast also predicts the flowers will bloom earlier than the average date of 24 March.

Due to a recent cold snap, sakura will start three days later than expected. Today, Kochi has announced the start of the cherry blossom season ahead of the rest of the country.

The Kochi Local Meteorological Observatory said March 23 the flowers bloomed six days later than last year and one day later than usual. It marked the first time since 2018 that Kochi has beaten other prefectures in reporting the earliest spring blooms. Observatory staff members confirmed five blossoms on a sample Somei-Yoshino cherry tree in Sannomaru, the site of the city's impressive Kochi Castle foundations, at 4 p.m. that day. The temperature in Kochi was 14.7 degrees. Junichi Masuda, an official at the meteorological observatory, said cold weather on March 20 and 21 likely delayed the blooming. The trees are expected to reach full bloom in around one week to 10 days.

Someiyoshino cherry trees started blooming in central Tokyo on 29 March, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced. The JMA's Tokyo Regional Headquarters announced a staff member visually confirmed that a sample tree at war-related Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward had 11 blossoms. Although the trees have tended to bloom earlier in recent years due to global warming, this was the latest in the last ten years. It was also 15 days later than last year and five days later than usual. The newest bloom in Tokyo was observed on 11 April 1984.

This year's cherry blossoms feel wishy-washy: late, inconsistent, and crowned by cold and wet weather. Some trees have already shed their petals entirely, while others have not yet fully bloomed. However, Tokyo declared peak bloom yesterday:

A diverse local and international audience had assembled at Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, eagerly anticipating the declaration. On 4 April, it was officially announced that Tokyo's cherry blossoms had reached their peak bloom. Yasukuni Shrine is home to a notable someiyoshino cherry tree, which the Japan Meteorological Agency uses as a benchmark to monitor the onset and zenith of Tokyo's cherry blossom season.

Before the declaration, JMA officials walked around the sample tree, surrounded by a wooden fence, to confirm that at least 80 per cent of the tree's flowers had opened, the benchmark for "full bloom." The cherry blossoms are expected to peak for a week to ten days. The tree started blooming on 29 March, the latest date in the last ten years. However, it only took six days for the flowers to reach peak bloom, one day shorter than the average in the past. "Temperatures were low in February and March when flower buds were growing, but unseasonably high temperatures over the last weekend pushed the opening flowers to full blossom," the JMA said of the timing. The cherry tree at the shrine has been used as Tokyo's benchmark tree since 1966. It is one of 58 designated sample trees across Japan. Tokyo's tree was the 13th to be declared in full bloom.

The last cherry blossoms have reached Hokkaido :

The local meteorological office in Kushiro, Hokkaido, announced the appearance of cherry blossoms in the city on Friday, May 3, marking the last bloom of the season among the observation sites monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The year's first blossoms were spotted on Okinawa Prefecture's Miyako Island on Jan. 5. Over the next four months they spread across the country before reaching Kushiro this week. A staff member at the Kushiro office confirmed at about 3:30 p.m. on Friday that more than five flowers had opened on a designated specimen cherry tree at a park in the city.
