question about cell phones

Hi, my friend just arrived in Japan and will stay for 1-2 years.

He's got his alien card and would like to buy a keitai.

1-Which cell phone company would you recommend?

2-Which provides good services in English?

NTT DoCoMo seems to be the popular choice. Thier website offers english and they have several bilingual phones, but I couldn't tell you if they offer in person english service.

Vodafone is the next big service but i don't know much about them except they work with Verizon wireless I think.

I have a Vodafone and their customer service in English is good enough. The problem is the signal ! Either I get my communication cut off or I can barely hear the person on the other side of the line.

It seems like people using AU/KDDI and Docomo have better signal; however I'm not sure about the quality of their services...

Does anybody use AU/KDDI ? How about Tu-Ka ?
