Question about a sentence

In this sentence, what do you think is a good way to translate 位置付け? "Placement?" Or maybe something like "orientation?"

It's something like "the placement in relationship to the whole", like in a timeline.

Thanks, I'm glad to get another opinion on it. One other thing I would appreciate help with:

"洋館内の絵画は,アイテムやホテル全景を加工したもの など,絵画ではないものがある."

I'm probably misreading it completely but I can't figure out how/why "加工" is used in this sentence

I'd almost given up worrying about it, but the interpretation of a place in time in this sentence still never quite came together for me, given the subject : The tradition-based game (?) 'Silent Hill' サイレントヒルの伝承は, references the ideals of everyday folkloric works and the ranking or position of the people in them (???) maybe.....:? I don't know what other status or standing it would be referring to besides highlighting the lives of the common people in the story. Of course, this could be completely off base but at least it will give a native speaker something to correct.

Elizabeth-- thanks for your suggestion, that seems possible. I think that some things should become clearer if I explain more of the context here, though:

This sentence is from a section in which the creative team behind the Silent Hill series discusses some of the authors, filmmakers, artists, etc whose works they were inspired by/used as references in creating the games. What "この作品" refers to is Tono Monogatari, a collection of folklore compiled by the folklorist Kunio Yanagita. The way I read this sentence, the series' scenario writer is saying that in coming up with the folklore/traditions of Silent Hill, he used this book as a reference for the way that "prosaic" folklore should be and its "placement" (my best guess at what he means by this is something like "how to arrange elements of folklore/folk traditions," but I'm not sure how much sense that makes...)

As far as what "伝承" is in the context of the game series, I think it could refer to a number of things but there is a certain legend that's mentioned in another section of this book which is headed with the English word "folklore--" It states that the future site of Silent Hill was once "sacred ground where Native Americans conducted mysterious rituals. Before settlers came from Europe, Silent Hill was a holy place. Even then, the land seemed to possess a mysterious power. [The Native Americans] revered the town as "The Place of the Silenced Spirits." However, they were driven away by settlers and had to abandon the town."

Anyway, regarding the other sentence, I was hoping that someone could at least tell me this: Is "絵画はホテル全景を加工したもの" simply a way of saying "the picture is of a panoramic view of a hotel?"

Look up 加工 in your dictionary of choice and you'll see that it means to "process" something. In context, I think it makes perfect sense, so let's go back to the full original sentence.

洋館内の絵画は、アイテムやホテル全景を加工したもの など、絵画ではないものがある

"As for the paintings in the (Western-style) building, there are ones that are not (actual) paintings at all, but rather just processed images of various items and panoramic hotel shots." might work as a literal translation. Or, to be more colloquial, something like "The paintings in the building include processed pictures of random items, hotel panorama shots, and the like -- things that aren't actual paintings."

I think he's basically just saying that these "paintings" in the game that he's referring to aren't modeled after actual paintings but rather are just random photographs that the game designers have 'tweaked' to look like real paintings.
