Question about 紅く太っていて

I cannot understand if it is 紅く here modifies 太っていて, or is it modifies 月 「月は紅くて太っていて」? Also, is the second case possible, even if it is not correct in this sentence?

月は紅く太っていて、大爺様の目玉のようだった。

Semantically, that's the latter; 月は紅く (and) 太っていて, but 紅く太っていて indeed sounds like as if 紅く modifies 太っている, probably because of a similar expression 白く光る or like that. Especially, 紅く太っていく has a nuance that the subject becomes red and fat at the same time.
