Just wondering is there a difference between them or is the inclusion or exclusion of the という part simply a matter of preference?

For example:
君が私にやってほしいというのは何ですか。What is it that you want me to do?
よむのはつまらない。 Reading is boring


If the という part was removed or added, would it still mean the same thing?

I believe this thread should be helpful: koto & to iu in "to iu koto", "to iu imi", "to iu no wa" etc.
