Hi. :joyful:

Please remember that it's against the forum rules to post links to copyrighted material. This includes songs. Can people not post such links in the public part of the forum.

The forum will get into trouble if it is used as a place to post illegal downloads.

Thanks for your co-operation. 👍

When you say 'links' what do you mean? :?
I was meaning links to songs, or links to a place such as a torrent where you can download copyrighted material illegally.
I don't think it means Youtube. :)
What goes on in a private message, can't be seen. ;-)
And in answer to the last question, I don't know. Possibly it's because one of the mods for this section of the forum had been away for a while and then returned to the fray? Or maybe one of the owners of the forum had something said to them? Well, I can speculate but I really have no idea.

What happens if you do? I take them down, that's what happens.

Well isn't it 3 warnings or something like that before serious action is taken?

Taking links down isn't 'serious action'. Serious action is like banning someone. No one's gonna get 'told off' for putting up links - I'll just tiptoe in and remove them. Or if not me, then Twisted or Rocklee, who moderate this section.

And just to make myself quite clear - I am not intending to take jabs at anybody, I know full well that I have also posted links to songs here in the past, and not a very distant past at that. I wasn't aware of what the forum rules were (and in any case, it was none of my business to try and enforce them), and I am just stating them; I'm sure I'm not the only person who didn't know them, which is why I put this sticky up.

Same for me. i didn't know this new rule until you said to me on The Pillows thread i think. :-)

Sorry for the double post, but Kinsao, are we allowed to request songs? Like for example I went on to the Dir en grey thread and asked 'could some one send me the Marmalade Chainsaw mp3 via pm'. Is that allowed? 😌

Recently, one of the moderators removed a post because it was requesting an mp3. I had never seen that happen before, so it makes me think that something, somewhere, is stirring from hibernation.
On the other hand, that person had started a whole new thread for their request, which wasn't exactly a very discreet thing to do, now, was it? ;-)

Personally, I can't and don't read every single post in every single thread. ;-)

(After all... I don't even have to be here at all... )

Whatever happens in a PM is ok, but no linking to mp3's, torrents, illigal downloads. Youtube & all that is ok imo cause you can only view things there.

It's just that we don't want to be a forum for illigal downloads, cause that might get the owners into problems if you know what I mean :)

So no yousendit, rapidshare or whatnot.(in PM it's no problem)

@Kinsao, I myself didn't know either and posted links also in the past. But now I know better and only post in PM's, else the admin's will hang my *** :p

does this rule apply to signatures also?
Of course.

& I have to add: It is not OK to use PMs for illegal activities! But the staff has no access to PMs & therefore you will be able to do what you want there.

also note there are plenty of instant messengers and web email accounts out there that you can use to send things to each other rather than the forum.

Does this rule apply to PVs as well? PVs are copyrighted, right, but they can't be bought most of the time. The only way to see them, really, is on Japanese television, which most of us don't have access to, and only a limited number of artists release their PVs on DVD to be purchased. So, the only way for American fans to see videos is often through PVs dowloaded and shared on the internet. Also, what about live appearances of artists on television and radio shows. Like, when Miyavi did that radio program performance, etc. are we allowed to share videos like that? Just wondering, thanks!

What about concert clips. Not dvds, but clips recorded by fans. Also, technically most pictures are copyrighted. I forgot which band it was, but some band got mad seeing parts of their OHPs used as avatars and layouts on LJ and fansites... therefore I assume that's not ok as well. Even tabs are... I read that on a site I used to get bass tabs from. They shut down cause it's not an official representation of the music... there could be errors.

Say I wanted to post a link to a site that is affiliated with a band that has samples of the bands music and they have that's band permission to put those samples up. That is ok... correct? :?

It's just so hard to know... sometimes the line between what is legal and illegal can be fuzzy. How can one be always sure? I actually knew of this rule and forgot... now I feel bad. 😌

I would think PVs are ok, because if they're only shown on Japanese TV, there's no other way to get to see them, right? So it's not like it's taking money away from the artist or anything...

Also IMO live appearences would be ok, too; after all, if there's a programme on TV, you could videotape it and that wouldn't be illegal, would it? Except for cases where a live show or part of one has been released as part of an official DVD that is for sale... but as was pointed out, that's often not the case.

Concert clips recorded by fans would be ok because they're not copyright to anyone. Although if the band has said they don't want people recording in their concert and people go ahead and do it anyway, that's really disrespectful and I can only say don't encourage it. (I might be persuaded to look more kindly on people who do that just for their own personal memento, but for those who post links in public, I'll bite my thumb at them... )

Actually, PK, your point about the pictures had occurred to me, but there's nothing anyone can do about that in fact. I suppose technically speaking people ought to post the link to the site where they got the picture -- but anyway, most sites watermark their pictures so you can see where it's from. I mean c'mon, there's got to be some "freedom of information"! :)

If anyone was to get mad about the "artistic" use of band photos I would have thought it would be the photographer who took the pictures, rather than the band themselves! Unless the pics were being used to use the band to promote a product or something... but otherwise, they are just for a decoration, yes?

And of course if a band has given permission for their songs to be put up for sample, that's fine. 😌

Phew! ☝ I'm not knowledgeable about this... most of the time I'm just guessing... and after all I'm as selfish as the next person and just want "more music! more pics! more videos!"... although of course I want and try to support the artists where possible, it isn't always possible and yet I still want... so I try and put that to one side and make an objective thought about what would/wouldn't be allowed on J-ref. :p

it includes everything that's copyrighted.

pictures are different, i dont know why. but the theory on pics is that as long as no one complains, and they are within the pic posting rules of this forum, they are fine to post. but if we ever get a complaint they will be proptly removed.

while i understand the logic for PVs and all, we cant let the forum be held accountable, in any way, if anyone should try to persue legal action.

again, there are plenty of other mediums that can be used besides the forum for all transfers and sharing, use them instead.

What are the rules for pictures actually? is there a rule? in a thread I once posted about J-idols, I've been told to keep the pictures in a normal size... but when I look at the jpop section, wink to Jrock section. I see pictures that are larger than the screen, or 100 photo's on one page, are there no rule about this?

Hey, the word water has been patented, son don't use it =P also the @.

And what about if the band ask you to promote them?? I mean, some japanese punk bands had told me to share their music on internet (with my friends, you know, to make that band well known)

Not even bootlegs?? damn capitalism ツャ_ツャ

I urged the JPoppers once to upload their pics to the entertainment gallery instead of linking to graphics temporarily hosted on free servers (and resulting in ugly broken images). Well, to put it politely: I faced fierce opposition to that idea of mine. I have given up.

That's because the entertainment gallery sucks major holes and often takes entirely too long for photos to be "approved" and what not, it's so much easier with free hosting sites.
