Plain form help

Hello,

I`m writing an essay for my Japanese class, and my teacher wants me to use plain form (～だ、～である）.

I`m a little confused about the usage of verbs in the plain form. Here is just the introduction to my essay:

私は高校生の時に△△で留学して、〇〇にある神社で巫 女さんのお仕事をやってた。

その時、担任の〇〇先生が神社の神主さんだったから、 お正月に私に巫女さんのお仕事をやらせてあげた。

その経験はとても楽しくて面白かったから神道について 作文を書こうと思った。

I was wondering if I should use やってたんだ。 or んだ with any other verbs that I write. Is the way it is okay so far?
When should I use である、んだ、and just だ？As you can see I just used the regular past tense for the verbs(やってた）.

If anyone can clarify the differences between those endings for me, I will greatly appreciate it!

私は高校生の時、△△に(If △△ is a location) 留学して、〇〇にある神社で巫女の仕事をやった。

その時の担任の〇〇先生が神社の神主だったから、お正月私に巫女の仕事をやらせてくれたのだ/のである。

その経験はとても楽しく面白かったので、神道について作文を書こうと思う。
(If you continue this essay and is going to write about Shinto, 思う is more natural.)

This の/ん is the explanatory の/ん. The second sentence expresses the reason why you happened to work as a miko, so のだ/のである can be used.
