Photo Ratings: Gremlins Out There

I noticed something lately. Whenever a photo gets a 10 rating, no matter whose it is, within a short period of time someone knocks it off by giving it a lower rating. I suspect maliciously. Is there a way to make it that a member giving any kind of rating will automatically have their i.d. listed? This would help fight misuse of the rating system.

I gave Chi65's Jogashima/Miura hanto a 10 rating the other day and noticed this evening that someone anonymously knocked it down.
 
I can't help in the technical department, though I would suspect that doing such (or setting up such a deal so that all would be identified) would be so much of a tussle and ethical dilemma, that we could say it would be out of the question.

One other way of looking at it is that the standing result at any time will be the average of the total votes. If only three had voted, and one of those persons had given an incredibly low vote, it would be noticeably down.

Let's just hope that no foul play is going on.
 
It would be an invasion of property. The usernames of those who rate pictures are not listed for a reason. Would you want someone harassing you because you negatively rated a picture? I certainly wouldn't. No offense to you, but you're being paranoid.
 

No, not paranoia, just noticed a pattern of late. I don't believe anyone would have a problem with honest raters, but if someone is pulling mischief, then that's another story.

Invasion of "property"? Do you know what you're talking about?
 
Never mind, ratings are personal anyhow, and my thanks go to those who share my likings(about which I learned this way, thanks!), and others can do as they like, yet it might be helpfull to know, who is behind, and if maybe this same one does it more often.

I am not necessarily a friend of ratings anyhow, I just wish to share and see others too.

I am more puzzled about some posting errors. . .that keeps me away from posting more, not the rating business. For example, whats wrong with a boy's laughing face???. . .
and why do fotos simply dissappear?

I will then only go via host and delete from there for example, if such matters remain and give me a strange feeling about that fotosection.

It's not just photos. I've had a couple of signatures as well as a few words in my postings deleted. It seemed like a childish thing to do so I didn't think much of it--I thought he/she would grow out such adolescent behavior sooner or later. However, depriving other people from seeing pictures that members took the trouble to post seems to cross the line. There shouldn't be any reason for that. Could you please look more into this?
 
You've had signatures deleted? That seems strange... Could you provide a link to a post that had some words deleted?
 
I wonder???

Maybe it was the deal where your sig only appears once on each page or thread. I forget how that works?

@ signatures

Signatures appear only once per page, that's a global setting. Signatures are only deleted in case they violate our Rules (click the link at the bottom of each forum page to learn more about our ToS).

@ editing

In case some team members edits any of your posts there will be a tag "Edited by ..." and a reason. A quite transparent act of moderation.

@ downrating of pics

No way to control that. Blame it on the Illuminati.
 
All my postings have been well within the guidelines, I believe, and the changes that were made were done without any explanation. But I've learned not to take the Internet too seriously so I didn't let the deletions bother me. I just thought I should let you know because others have reported similar problems; you might have a hacker or something.

I've only used sigs twice to try to make my posts more amusing. Both were in this thread: Investment in the Artsﾂ… where is it?. The day after I posted the second one, they both disappeared. No biggee. Now that you're aware, the next time something like that happen, I'll report it right away.
 
Still some chinese pics never showed up despite an OK, and the jap. boy's face also were not taken, and I still don't know why nor did anyone explain, what might have happened. . .
Slightly deflated trust here, but goodwill.
(I would have loved to post more about China for some reasons, but the dissappearances plus limited version there. . .)
 
Do mean signature or attachment?

An attachment is post-specific whereas a signature is a global setting for all of Jref. That means that if you change your signature, it is changed for every post/thread you make on these fora. An attachment is linked to that specific post only, so posting a new attachment will not affect an older one.

I took the liberty to check, and I see that currently you don't have any signature specified whatsoever. That would explain why you don't see your signature anywhere. When you do have a signature set, you will be able to see only once per page you have a post shown.

Does this help at all?

Could you tell us which posts you are specifically referring to?

The problem may that they are Chinese pictures, not Japanese?
 
Thats what they were expected to be in the chinese section, see on the bottom right.
I already have three there and posted some more, but no message, nothing, they just dissappeared after posting and saying it was done alright.
And the boy was japanese and in the japanese section. There it took them a long time, until I got the formal message, that the subject or whatever did not fit (not the size though), which is not understandable, it was under people and in no way offensive etc.

And at the moment, it takes a long time already for the last posted ones, to finally appear. Again the japanese section. I still hope, they will.

Its just so unreliable. . .

As for pictures disappearing, it may be that if you do not own the copywrite for that picture, the copywrite holder may eventually deny your link from working. I don't know how that works, but on my blog, I have had a picture removed without my knowledge for that reason.

Would that be applicable by any chance?
 

The sigs were deleted by someone else because the first sig remained for awhile. But its a trifling matter, I just added them as an afterthought. Thank you for your help and sorry for putting you to so much trouble.

Just turn off the star rating. There surely must be a way in the Admin Control Panel.

Chi65, I'm sorry, I just realized my mistake. I had it in my head that you were referring to the forum at large, but you are referring to the photo gallery, aren't you? Unfortunately, I never venture into that part of the forum, so I can't offer any insight.

Could you try again, and if you still have problems, write about it again in this thread? I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

I never noticed there being a Chinese Gallery. It's sort of a mini version of the Japanese Gallery. Thanks.

Speaking of copyrights, I ran across a lot of the racequeen photos at other websites ages ago. I always wondered why the copyright rule hadn't applied here (not that I mind seeing them).
 
At present its alright, and I may post the laughing japanese boy in the Japanese Gallery once more, when I feel like. And if it is rejected once more, I will let you know, MO.
The Chinese Gallery has some less functions, thus more problems, as I realised, pity, really!
Because I have been in China three times and also made rare interesting fotos there.
There I also met many Japanese (very helpfull ones those days, actually!).
I wanted to do it slowly via silkroad, then Korea, then Japan, also for cultural and mythological reasons amongst others. This turned out to be perfect, since a lot about Japan explained itself this way.
And I could illustrate some points.
We will see.
ArmandV, you know Hakata/Fukuoka (great fotos, by the way, I love that place very much!!), and I suppose, also its early China connections, that alone would be a reason to include China now and then, not to mention Kyoto versus Xian.
