News Pentagon UFO records include sightings near Japan

The US DoD has released an initial batch of previously classified files related to alleged UFO sightings, including two videos showing what the military describes as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, near Japan. The Pentagon said the release followed an order by President Donald Trump to make public what it called "new, never-before-seen files." The aim, officials said, was to provide "maximum transparency" and allow the public to decide for themselves what to make of the material. One of the videos, nearly two minutes long and dated 2023, is identified as DOW-UAP-PR47. The footage was reported by the US military's Indo-Pacific Command, with the location listed simply as "Japan."

According to the accompanying description, an infrared sensor aboard a US military platform tracked "three distinct areas of contrast" that appeared to maintain fixed positions and orientations relative to one another. A second video, only nine seconds long, was reported in 2024 and lists the East China Sea as the location. The footage, labelled DOW-UAP-PR46, reportedly shows a UAP near Japan that resembles a football-shaped object. A caption attached to the file describes the object as having "three radial projections," with one pointing vertically and two angled downward at roughly 45 degrees from the main body.

The growing interest in UAPs comes as drones — and less advanced surveillance technologies — proliferate across the globe. In one instance in 2023, the U.S. military's shootdown of a Chinese surveillance balloon that had flown across a broad swath of the country triggered a diplomatic furor. The incident prompted revelations by Japan's Defence Ministry that it "strongly" suspected objects initially viewed as UAPs that flew over the country in 2019, 2020 and 2021 — including over areas near Self-Defence Force bases — were also Chinese spy balloons.
