Pen-sized personal computer!

that is so cool! Cool and freaky because it's getting to that point where our future is looking more like the Jetsons!

That's a very cool mini computer. I'm definitely gonna buy it when it's in stores. :-)
 
The virtual keyboard was featured before in magazines but I am surprised by the pen type screen generator. It would need a strong energy and light source which I am surprised would be available commercially so quickly. I wouldn't buy the keyboard generator though as I would miss the feel of the keys. Just too slow to change.....
 
I don't believe it.

Or if it is true and not a hi-tech kinda joke then behind the pens there'll be all the usual weight of hard drives, memory sticks, cpu's, dvd drives and necessary bulky, weighty power supplies and whatever else.

In other words they'd only be - if they're true at all - 'front end' devices and you couldn't wander around the world with simply those pens as your computer.

And, yes, the 'screen generator' if true represents an incredible technological step....

I've seen a series of still shots showing this thing and its noticeable to me that there's no accreditation whatever, no scientific accreditation, no commercial accreditation....

I think it's a joke.....

A believable future is a mobile phone type screen and mobile phone type comms - perhaps with voice - to your computer and we can see there that though the front end looks something like as small as we've got here, there's a normal computer at the back end (and all the infrastructure of the mobile phone network and the TCP/IP network)

Tell me I'm wrong.... show me some tech details....

This is actually possible, although maybe not the projection keyboard etc.

The 'pen' could be attached to a harddrive base of about 30GB (Not much I know, but portable) that is pocket sized. Also, TV screens could have bluetooth adaptors that can link to these things. Easily send the image of the computer to the screen. Keyboards are more of a problem, but you can get these mini-keyboards, ne?

I don't believe the projection keyboard; it isn't just X and Y values in the world that you go; oh, something has just touched the point where the letter ' ' is so type it; it would be set off by dust in the air.

There could be more accurate stylus based input, and you get a small board that you can use which is bluetooth linked...

People would have to learn certain things though, eg draw a swirl for a back space, draw a small picture that is F and the # joined for the F1-12 keys etc, and maybe a vertical line for a space, etc etc.

This way it could work, but with hologram keyboards? Z values affect it too.

Still, we can be hopefull.

Yep. There's many ways currently possible of achieving the same end - depending, I guess, on how you define that 'end'.

If we define it as simply contacting your computer and inputting to it and getting stuff back from it with a tiny device you can carry around then we've currently got it with our mobile phones and internet connectivity, emailing and such.

But that 'simple' definition is very vague really in terms of quality of 'input' and 'output' and quality of input and output is nearly 100% of what matters in communications including computering.

I mean such things as an easy to operate keyboard instead of micro sized cellphone keys. I mean access to programs on your computer that will do many things for you easily, rather than simple access to email. I mean receiving output from those programs instead of simply receiving web pages and emails. And so on.... it's everywhere. When you input a photograph you prefer and there's a million dollar industry dedicated to providing it for you - high fidelity megapixel input. Same for sound. Same for spreadsheet input - a simple archaic spreadsheet looks clumsy and stupid against today's spreadsheets which offer 'high quality' input and output.

So its a question of quality and the cellphone is clumsy, tiny, limited.

But it does the basic job. It connects. That's 99% of the task, that connection.

That connection frees us from the clumsy, heavy, tied-down hardware that does all the computing for us.

Now we just need this question of 'quality' for input and output.

For input I'd say a mixture of voice and scanning will be the way to go.

Train your computer, the world's computers, to recognise voice commands and we can run them from the tiniest microphone anywhere in the world.

And, of course, if you can access your computer you can access all the computers in the world wide web

This is current technology. There's no problem training a computer to recognise your voice. What's missing is the operating system or the programs to enable voice commands to be spoken into the computer.

Currently you speak to your computer and it will make a text file of what you've said, for word processing.

A little more than that but not much.

But when you can sit on the top of Mt Everest and speak into your cellphone, watching the screen for display, with a zoom in facility, and say things like this, we'll be getting there....

see what I mean? That's all possible right now, with your cellphone and a little voice comms programming and software...

WOAH!!!! No way man!!! Is this for real!!! This is so awesome... where can I get the kit? I halve a palm pilot... I am so totally impressed! I may be cyborg before I know it. Can't wait! I feel like Harry Seldon has invaded reality.

MAN!!! I had to actually go and educatively find the truth! Why'd you go and put my hopes up like that? HAHAHA!! :-)
 
Anyone who read to the bottom of the page will see that this pen does not exist, even in prototype form. Looks like you're going to be waiting quite a bit longer if you're jumping to buy one.

True, this is simply a design, not a functioning prototype, but the technology will be here quite soon. Laser keyboards are already a reality & micro projector technology is moving at a brisk pace. (It may seem that it would lack power, yet with blue lasers getting cheaper, & adaptive optical arrays getting better, it's imminently feasible.) If quantum dot Flash memory gets much smaller, & processors are reduced as well, the unit could even conceivably be standalone. More likely, it will interface with a small "smart" unit, the pen being a mere "dumb terminal."

The keyboard is real. You can buy it now for ~$100.
 
to make a powerfull computer the size of a pen.... in all honesty is
NOT a giant leap forward....

to make tiny battery that would fit INSIDE the pen, and leave room for
the components AND not create undue heat AND not go dead in about 5
minutes flat (oh the pun...geddit...flat!)

is where the challenge be.

as previosly stated laser keyboards have been around for a while....

as for the screen of this "pen" computer....it is unlikely to be a
projector...as that drains alot of power....

now this is the future...especially when you consider that they have
now developed a FULL colour flexible screen...whats more not only is
it viewable by 180 degrees.... it also uses VERY little power as it
only needs power to CHANGE the image!!!

tho at the moment the colour version is not yet flexible enough to be
turned into a scroll (like the electronic ink)

but in the not too near future it looks set to have a use with mobile
phones and Pda's!!

but the pen idea is a nice idea...if only that, an idea.

and you would be suprised....MOST technology...comes from Europe
(internet, DVD's luccade toov <= if that means nothing to you then you
must youtube 'doovde' ) and America (computers!!).... however the
markets for this technology is stronger in asia which is why it gets
released there first :-(

i'm not saying by the way that technology is not being developed in asia!!
e.g. the honda robot Asimo ....which is VERY scary...it's got
hands...it can hold an M16...and in a few Asimo generations time will
probably be able to go anywhere we can go and some places we can't!
and many other advances also!
